I bought the 4-Runner when I moved to the mountains of Colorado.  It got me through huge snow drifts, blizzards, mud, you name it... never had a problem.  I've since moved to a place that rarely get snows, but I still dread the day I will have to give up my 4Runner due to old age (I love it that much).  The only maintenance I've done on it is regular oil changes, tires, and regular recommended maintenance (although usually I'm late by 10K miles or so).  I've had to replace the starter once - that's it.  Everything else is still going strong.

In my opinion the only 4runner worth buying is 95-98. The 97 is a great year. I had a 97 Tacoma and it was like your vehicle, long lasting mileage, and very low maintenance. That truck never had anything go wrong with it.
