This is the second Toshiba laptop in the A200 series that we've bought. We bought the first one for my daughter Christmas 2006, and one for my son this past Christmas. Both of them are really tough, yet lightweight.
We really wanted our kids to have their laptops for the end of their senior years, which we did, and these laptops are absolutely great for what the kids do. My daughter spends her time watching videos, talking using her web-cam, and working on her college notes and homework.
My son uses his to work on homework (he'll be in college in the Fall), gaming, and talking with friends. He would be considered a "techie", as he set up and manages a web site for our Church's youth group. He manages it and keeps it up-to-date, as well as getting all of his pictures uploaded on the computer.
An optional feature that we took advantage of is a 36-month "come to the house or change it out warranty." We have not had to use it, and both of the kids have had no trouble with these laptops. My son had wanted an HP, which is what I have, and initally he thought he'd rather have the HP, but he now sees that his handles better than the HP. (I've actually tried to switch with them!) Mine - 2 years ago cost about $2200, and that was with mail-in rebates, and instant rebates. We were able to purchase theirs, with the warranties for about $850 including tax. The prices ranged from $720 to $799, and for what you get, it's definitely worth the money.
They both have wireless, modem, ethernet, memory card reader for camera chips, and 3 USB ports. They both have 1024 MB of memory upgradable to 2048, with an 80GB hard drive. They both have 15.4" screens.
The sleek design of these laptops make them very appealing to look at, and the lightweight design makes it easy to carry around with you.
My daughter's came with Window's XP, and my son's came with Vista, which so far he loves. I think the jury's still out on Vista, and it does take up more room than XP.
Overall, these Toshiba laptops are great in looks and functionality. So far, so good. 18 months in with the first one, and no problems.. and now we have a second one, 2 months in with no problems, and handles with everything a student and a novice graphics/web designer needs.
