Toshiba Satellite P205D-S8802 Laptop —

I was in search for a laptop to replace our Dell Desktop that we have had for almost 8 years. We knew we wanted one that had a number pad on it but a lot of them were either out of our price range or didn't have exactly what we wanted and had debated about buying a Dell refurbished computer but I was real iffy on doing that.

Then I came across an HP that was in my price range and thought I found the one. But, then I found an even better deal at Best Buy for even cheaper. It was on sale for $649, originally $799 and really did some research on it. I asked the computer guy at work and he told me to stay away from HP because they are cheap and will not last long and to either get a Dell or a Toshiba so I was even more inclined to get the Toshiba since a brand new Dell was too expensive for me. After telling him the specs on the Toshiba he told me to definately get the Toshiba, you won't go wrong.

It's got a 17" screen that is gorgeous, very true to life and makes everything very life like. It has 2gig to run Windows Vista which I heard is a must. It has AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 which I knew nothing about and thought you should always get Intel but the computer guy at work said I would have no problem since what I do most would be spreadsheets, pictures, email, internet, etc. He said it does take a little more battery power but that it is a great buy and just as good as Intel, it's just personal preference. The Hard Drive is 160gb which is perfect for what I need because it also has a cd/dvd burner which will save me a lot of hard drive space because right now most of our hard drive is filled with pictures on our old computer, and this way I can directly burn the pictures, therefor not taking up any space at all.

It has 6, that's right 6, USB ports which I think is absoutley fabulous, our desktop only had 2 and just didn't do it justice. There is also a digital media card reader which is great, I just have to take my memory card out of my canon and insert it directly into my computer. The only downside is that it has to be plugged in for it to read it, I'm going to assume it's because of battery power, which is not a big deal to me as I am never far from a power source.

As far as software, it comes with a bunch of junk you have to delete, like Skype, Napster, but that's no big deal, I think every computer you buy comes with that stuff. Other softwareIs: Microsoft Works 9.0; Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5; Adobe Acrobat Reader and plust you get a free trial of Microsoft Office 2007, which takes some getting used to, but from what I can tell so far Microsoft Works really has improved and should be just right for what I need it for, working on spreadsheets for work. It is compatible with Microsoft Excel so you can open a Works file in Excel and vice versa.

The really only complaint so far I have is the battery power. At first it wouldn't stay charged for more than an hour but after getting some tips I let it drain all the way down and then recharged and now I can get about 2 hours out of it, which is fine by me. The tech guy at work told me that 17" laptops tend to have lower battery life than the lower screen ones. There is a glitch some people experience, including myself, where the screen will go black. But, all I did was tweak the power settings according to what some of the other reviewers did on Best Buy and it has never done it again!
