I have tried several medications over the past twenty years to help with my migraines.  Imitrex seems to be the best by far.  I use the single use nnose spray but it was suggested to me by my doctor to try Topomax.  I was on the lowest possible dose for 2 weeks and lost my vision suddenly.  The symptoms mimmicked a migraine so I didn't realize until it was too late.  I am a nurse and keep myself well informed before using a medication but the literature is very misleading and does not tell you the true seriousness of the occular side effects.  If you are on… read full review »

My doctor prescribed Topamax because I was getting terrible migraines and also needed to lose some extra weight. Topamax was great at controlling migraines but I hated the side effects. I found myself forgetting how to say the simplest of words. As a graduate student, this was embarrassing in class when I had to do presentations. I could look at a word, know what it meant but completely forget the pronunciation and these were easy words like "absolutely" and "realistic". I became very forgetful and depressed. I have been suffering from what had been diagnosed as "tension headaches" for years, with no relief in sight!! I was on topamax for over a year and a half.  While it did make me spacey, it decreased the frequency of my migraines and made the ones I had lighter in severity.  I used it mainly to help control the pain of trigeminal neuralgia.  I was on a very high dose of it because this pain is very hard to control, so I had to see a neurologist on a regular basis.  I was taken off of it when I changed neurologists and the new doctor saw that I had a history of kidney stones.  I never had any trouble with them while on the medicine though, because I was always very careful to… read full review »

I had a lot of problems with light and sound sensitivity which would bring on migranes. These situations were not easy to avoid with a 1 year old!  I went to my doctor and he told me of Topamax that I could try in addition to Zomig to control the actual migranes.  I had to ease on the medication, increasing my dosage week by week.  It took about 3 weeks to get into my system but it is wonderful!  This medication has leveled out my senses and now migranes are few and far apart!  For some reason, it does alter the taste of coke, now it taste like soda water to… read full review »

I've been taking Topamax 50mg 2x a day since June 2007 and it has helped the intesity of my migraines.  A great side effect of the medicine is that I have lost almost 20 pounds.  I am very careful in making sure what other meds I take inconjunction with it so I don't mix.  Sometimes my concentration is a little off or slow but it's not too bad to stop taking the meds and risk having worse migraines.  My family has a history of migraines and so I see a neurologist and a chiropractor to help keep an eye on everything.  The chiropractor has really helped with the… read full review »

I was prescribed this a couple years ago, for unexplained 15 second headaches. They would come, and 15 seconds later, I would be fine. But those 15 seconds were a killer. I was prescribed 25mg twice daily, I took that for a week. It made me tired, it made me have a loss of words, and it made me feel tingely all over. BUT it made my headaches go away. So I took it upon myself to lower my dose, and it still helped my headaches, AND all the effects went away. When my neurologist suggested Topamax, I was almost completely out of options with my migraines. They were getting worse and worse--hitting me every few days. I was at a point where I have tried so many other options; I really didn't think that the Topamax would work for me. However, it did. Topamax has been amazing so far. I am having far fewer migraines. The side effects (for me) are minimal. I have mild tingling in my feet every once in awhile, but it is nothing that really bothers me at all. TOPAMAX AS A TREATMENT FOR SEIZURES — I was totally frustrated and left alone and somehow not part of the rest of the "normal" world. This is what my frequent seizures had done to me, the Doctors I had seen had been no help and the medications had not worked, I was reluctant to go anywhere alone like the grocery store because if I had a seizure I would be whisked off the ER. I have been on some type of anti seizure meds for for the past 18 years.  So with that come a lot of side effects, such as memory loss, tingling of hands and feet weight gain (but not with this drug!) I was taken off my old drug and put on this on because of memory loss, memory loss is still there with this drug but not compared to the other drug I was on.  This controls my seizures with 2 pills a day instead of 6 or 7 of my other ones and Topamax also helps my headaches.  I have also lost almost a much needed 40 lbs! — — — —… read full review »

I am no medical doctor, so I am only writing about my personal experience with this medication - Topamax - for migraines. I have been taking it for about 3 years and I love it. I have less migraines and go to the chiropractor less often now. This medication does also lessen my appetite which is a welcomed side-affect for me. My doc recommended Topamax to me to get rid of the follow-up headaches that I normally get after the migraine attacks.  It seems to be working well so far and I do not get the pain in my jaws, that lasts for 30 mins., like after taking an Imitrex.  It also works for the auras I get often.  Normally with Imitrex I would have to take a tylenol or two afterwards to get a hold of the headaches that follow the migraine.  Now only one or two of Topamax and shortly the migraine is… read full review »
