Well, hello, Viewpoints readers. As this is my first review here, I thought I should say hi. I have not always loved movies. I was more of a stuck-in-the-same-rut tv viewer. But when I married, I happened to marry a movie guru, so movies have become a much loved part of my life.
My tastes in movies change as much as the weather in Wyoming, but the ones that I love stay with me. Here are my favorites.
1. Dragonfly starring Kevin Costner. Not only does this film have a strong, yet not traditional love story it also has a twist of a little creepiness. Of course, after you've watched the whole movie, the creepy parts make sense and lose the "eek" factor. A story of a man who loses his wife in an accident begins to encounter strange happenings. Is it the imagination of a grieving widower or something more?
2. Finding Neverland starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. The only thing that makes this story of love vs. loss and imagination vs. reality better is the fact that it was based on the true story of how J.M. Barrie came to write the timeless story of Peter Pan.
3. Cars featuring the voice of Owen Wilson. Not many kids movies win and then hold my affections, especially after the 300th time my toddler has watched them while we are driving in the car. But Disney/Pixar's Cars can claim this honor and reminds us that having friends and something to believe in is never a bad thing.
4. Rocky Horror Picture Show starring Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon. Okay, so maybe I don't watch this movie all the time, but it's crazy appeal ensures I watch it when it surfaces on television or around Halloween, at least long enough to sing the great songs in the first half of the movie. And there is no denying that it's still the most fun a person can have at a live viewing of any movie. If you can catch it in a theater near you, it's definitely a no-miss event.
5. Sleepless in Seattle starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. In trying to narrow down my favorite movies, I found that both of these actors were in many of my top list. But in the end, this particular movie won out for it's simple, love story and for giving women over 35 everywhere hope that they would find love rather than be killed by a terrorist.
6. The DaVinci Code starring Tom Hanks. Okay, okay, so I picked another Tom Hanks movie. I went to the theater to see this movie and was really afraid that the hype leading up to it's release would be just that...hype. But I enjoyed the story and found that the musings that there might be some truth to it, made it slightly more interested. Does the movie need the story to be true? Not at all. It's a great story on it's own.
7. What the Bleep Do We Know starring Marlee Matlin. A different experience movie-wise, What the Bleep actually is a much a documentary as it is a story. Sticking a toe in the vast and deep topic of quantam physics, trying to make it understood by normal folk without drowning them completely in big words and complex concepts, the writers tell a story of a woman who is struggling with life and her journey in learning who she really is and why.
8. Silent Hill starring Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean. While I love psychological thrillers, I am not usually attracted to movies that contain a lot of gore. But the story of a burning town with a long, dark history probably couldn't be told as well as it was in Silent Hill without a little ick. A daughter with issues, a mother trying to save her and a town with secrets - the combination is a deep movie - the kind that you discover some new aspect after watching it the 2nd, 5th or 10th time. My only wish is that Sean Bean would have had a bigger role. He's a very good actor.
9. Grease starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. I struggled a bit going over some of my favorite older movies. After all, there are many, many great ones. However, my timeless favorite is still Grease. Who can resist a little high school drama paired with a lot of music? I say any movie that made kids everywhere pretend to be a T-bird or a Pink Lady qualifies it to go straight to the top of any list.
10. The Holiday starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. The Holiday does not contain any of my favorite actors. In fact, the four main characters are portrayed by actors that I don't love much at all. For me, they are just okay in most movies but put them together and they produce one of the best love stories I've ever watched. It's a light, funny, heart-warming story of people finding that right person for them.
Now, I know I've left a lot of great movies off my list. There are honorable mentions in the Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean movies as well as some of the timeless action movies like The Fugitive, Patriot Games or even the newer Deja Vu. But if you are looking for variety and enjoyment, my original 10 list is a great place to start.
