Duke's Top 10 Movies of All Time
(That I have Actually Seen)

  1. Shindler's List - This movie had some great performances by both the stars and extras.  Its use of black and white accented by color was striking.  The images of Holocaust victims was as gripping and real as any documentary, yet the drama of the plot kept the film from being as dry as many documentaries are.
  2. Saving Private Ryan - There have been a lot of war movies, but this is the best one.  It shows the honor, glory, tragedy and horror of war better than most films I've seen.  It asks questions about war without condemning the brave men who fight in them.  You are immersed into the battles and feel like you are really there, especially when viewed in the theater.  The only other film that is even close to it was the HBO series Band of Brothers which was made by some of the same people.
  3. Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back - I'm a huge sci fi fan and grew up with the Star Wars films.  I saw A New Hope at a drive-in when it first came out and was blown away by it.  As great as A New Hope was, Empire is even greater.  For the time that the film came out, the special effects were state of the art.  The movie also has the best humor, drama and overall performances of any of the Star Wars films.  Even Yoda, a muppet, gives a great performance thanks to the genious of Frank Oz and Jim Henson's crew.  The duel between Luke and Darth Vader in Cloud City is my favorite scene in sci fi movies.
  4. Lawerence of Arabia - I'm not a big Peter OToole fan, but his performance in this movie is fantasitc.  The scenery and battles are breathtaking.  It's one of the last grand scale great epics made in the pre-CGI age.
  5. The Godfather - I'm not a huge fan of mafia movies, but this is still a great film.  It really draws you in.
  6. Titanic - I could have done without the sketching her in the nude scene, but otherwise, this film is the greatest disaster movie ever made.  The sinking of the Titanic is so well done, you feel like you are going down with it.  The way the movie magic blends so seamlessly with the historic and real Titanic photos and later wreckage is amazing.
  7. E.T. - The best movie about an alien landing ever.  Every time I watch it, the ending gets to me.  It's also has some of the best acting by little kids I've ever seen.  For the time it came out E.T. himself looks so real.
  8. Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie - Here is a movie based on a TV show that is actually faithful to the TV show (very rare).  It even starred the same people who were in the TV show in their original roles (even more rare).  If you get MSTK's unique brand of humor, it's hilarious. Making terrible movies fun to watch is pure genious!
  9. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - Yes, I love all of the Indy movies, but this is still my favorite.  The performances of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery (two of my favorite actors) are terrific.  Connery is so funny in this movie.  I also love stuff about Medieval knights and archelology so it has a lot going for it.  The theme of Indy and his dad patching up their relationship is great.
  10. Apollo 13 - Who says realistic, historical space travel is boring?  This film based on fact is every bit as exciting as any sci fi movie.  It has some neat period touches and great performances by Ed Harris et al.
