I was thrilled to find Toolhaus at www.toolhaus.org. I just typed in any Ebay member name and could see the negative and/or neutral comments both left for and by the person in question.
If you've ever been burned at Ebay, then you know that it is important to check the feedback. Since Ebay doesn't bother to offer an option to sort the feedback and also since they drop it after a period of time, it's really not easy to check at the Ebay site.
Ebay sellers (and some buyers) are all over chat and message boards online suggesting that buyers who get taken for a ride should have checked feedback. Glancing at the percentages featured by Ebay usually suggests that buying is safe. Also, there's a lot of back scratching at Ebay and the, "Leave me a positive, and I'll leave you one too." Finding the buried problems is much more difficult than it would appear.
Toolhaus streamlined the process which should be good for everyone except the bad sellers (who have bad feedback and deserve it) and for Ebay (since the bottom line is for them to promote sales - good or bad). I could pull up neg and neu feedback and review what had been posted at Toolhaus. In some cases, this was even good for the sellers. If a buyer clicks neg and says something like, "I didn't like the music on the CD," then I know it's the buyer who has the problem. On the other hand, I sometimes found real problems and could dig deeper. If I saw problems with a seller at Toolhaus, then I'd even read positives back at Ebay. Sometimes buyers would go ahead (after probably being pushed) and rate positive on the experience but mention problems in the positive feedback block. It's a shame it's that way, but it is.
Unfortanately Ebay has rolled out yet another feedback plan, and the new plan blocks Toolhaus. I feel sure that they'll find a work around, and I hope it's soon. They do provide a great service. Ebay isn't willing to provide real tools to check out sellers. That doesn't promote sales. You see a 97% positive rating at Ebay but don't dig back page after page after page to see that someone rips people off. If Ebay really wanted you to know, then they'd give you the same sorting tools that Toolhaus has been providing for years.
I haven't been buying much through Ebay lately. I have bought some great stuff from great sellers. Sadly though I do not trust Ebay (the company) and also found the discussion forum listed under community on the front page. If you read the posts under the section called Feedback in the discussion forums, then you're likely to have second thoughts about buying through Ebay. Some of the very verbal sellers hang out there (and use names other than those they use for selling) and talk about things like making buyers leave feedback first and such. I find the attitude in the sellers den very troubling. When you add the fact that Ebay has now changed the settings to prevent Toolhaus from offering some real data, then I think I'll just drive down to the store and make do with what I can find.
