Toni Morrison's Sula is a hard-hitting, unflinching novel that takes a look at African American communities circa 1930.  Sula is a woman who was ahead of her time, trying to overcome the past and easily ignoring how others think of her.  Her actions and the actions of the people in the community are written with such gusto and earnestness that you may find that you are standing on your own porch and watching the events from "The Bottom" itself.  This novel is written honestly, fearlessly, and asks a lot of hard questions.  Is Sula good or bad? Are we even meant to know?
