TomTom - One XL-S GPS Device —

Not so long ago, I was the designated Mapquest navigator in the household.  When I needed directions to a new destination, I always found the map, printed it off, and read it aloud to my husband while he drove.  All in all, it was better than hurriedly scribbled directions on a napkin.  Even better, I bought my husband the TomTom ONE XL-S GPS Navigation Unit as a special gift.  My Mapquest days are over.

Just researching the unit was a nightmare exploration into the jungle of portable GPS units now available to consumers.  There was Mio, Magellan, Gamin, and Tom Tom to consider; each of which gets you from point A to point B fairly accurately, though in different routes.

I also noticed that within each brand of GPS there was a dizzying assortment of models to choose from, at prices ranging from affordable to stratospheric.  Each GPS unit seemed to have its share of pros and cons, and no two reviewers or consumer electronic magazines seemed to come to the same conclusion.  After weeks of online research, I decided that the TomTom One XLS had the most functionality for the money.  At the time of purchase, it retailed for $350, and I had an instant $100 rebate offer to make it even more affordable.

What really sold me on this GPS unit was the Text-to-Speech technology that is typically only available in higher priced units.  Text-to-Speech means that instead of a generic voice prompt directing you to "turn left in 500 feet" the XL-S gives you a spoken street name prompt to "turn left on Mannheim Rd."  I just thought it was an incredibly useful feature for my hubby if he could hear the street names being spoken as opposed to thinking about how many feet he was away from a turning point.

Another great plus in my decision to buy the XL-S is the large 4.3 inch wide touchscreen (rather than the standard 3.5 inch).  Still a discreet unit, the larger screen size just makes it easier for the driver to keep track of his progress.  It can be easily seen from its spot near the dashboard and I was pleased with the bright graphic screen and the ability to see in even in bright sunlight.

When my husband opened his gift, he was a little surprised and happy with the GPS unit.  He went to the website, and had it set up and ready to go in minutes.  He's told me that it's been very helpful in getting him to his destination, and overall, I made a good decision by selecting this unit.

With so many choices in GPS navigation units these days, it can be overwhelming attempting to find the perfect unit to give as a gift.  I highly recommend the TomTom One XL-S GPS Unit for its reliability, wide and attractive touch screen, spoken street names, and low price tag.  If you'd like to know more about my husband's experience with the unit, check out  The Bard's TomTom One XL-S Review.

Me too! It's our anniversary this weekend anyone want to send one our way? I heard that gps maybe one of the new forms of therapy for couples, no more arguing over the navigator and the driver.
