TomTom - One XL GPS Navigation System Review Summary

Those looking to ditch MapQuest and Google Maps should take the TomTom XL GPS navigation device for a test drive, but be careful of the learning curve. While one reviewer praised the TomTom XL, stating "Some of the nice features of the TomTom include an easy-to-use touch-screen interface,” another reviewer stated simply “don’t buy it.” The small and lightweight TomTom XL includes Bluetooth connectivity, a beautiful LCD color screen, and decent battery life. Bottom-Line: In the short period of time I have used the TomTom One XL-S I have become enamored of it and what it can do.  — The TomTom One XL-S is an update to the TomTom One XL; the XL-S brings text-to-speech capabilities to the table.  This means that instead just a visual… read full review »

The TomTom ONE XL is easy to use, easy to see, and easy to hear, but lacks a lot of features that make a GPS truly useful.  If this is your first GPS unit and you use it primarily to go from one address to another, you'll probably be happy.  But if you've ever used a Garmin unit, you'll… read full review »

Tom Tom's One XL is pretty darned handy.  — The tiny little portable unit is lightweight, and easy to remove and reinstall in the car.   Big plus.   You can also choose the voice you want to hear (and some of them talk faster than others).   My favorite feature is the fact that the Tom Tom tells you which LANE to get into before an exit comes up.   Why have to guess?   Just relax and follow directions.   You can also reset the screen for day or night, so that it's easy to read but not disturbing.   — Cool… read full review »

We bought the TomTom One XL and have been very happy with it.  I've checked out one of the Garmin's and I feel the TomTom has more destinations and cities than the Garmin, which is why we chose it.  —   We had some problems with our unit (there was something wrong with it from the factory, it seems) so we had to call the customer support several times, and they could not have been better.  I think the great customer service people is probably one of the best things about TomTom.  Every single person we spoke to was knowledgeable and very calming and… read full review »

I had a very frustrating experience with this product.  I bought one and on the way home, I was able to use it.  It worked great!  When I got home and connected it to my computer is when all of the trouble started. — All of a sudden I could not access any of the menus.  I disconnected it from my computer,  re-started my computer, tried it all again.  Nothing worked.  I called Tech Support and an hour later, the person I spoke to suggested that I take it back to the store I bought it from and get a different one.  I did just that. — I… read full review »

The Tom Tom's Maps are incredibly INACCURATE and consistently wrong.  The points of interest don't include normal things like Auto Parts stores, grocery stores, etc.  The directions it provides are consistently incorrect.  For the expense, it is not worth it.  The I-phone or blackberry has better directions and maps. — The calculated arrival time never takes into account your traveling speed. — Real-time traffic is a monthly fee. —… read full review »

I bought the TOM TOM XL GPS for my car because I get lost all of the time. The TOM TOM does not do much better because it has been getting me lost and as a result I have gone through a lot of gas.Last week a dealership was already downloaded into the GPS and instead of taking us straight to the dealership the directions took us us 30 minutes out of the way through back roads and neighborhoods. There was a street we were on hat said one street but the GPS was reading another street. A simple address that should have taken 7 minutes took us an hour later out of the way and made me late for my… read full review »

This unit was a gift, and my first experience using such a device. I found it very easy to figure out and use, but have to admit that it is limited in comparison with other models I've seen in other people's cars. For example, it's small and so hard to read while driving, and the suction cup sometimes pops off the window without warning. Still, this is a relatively inexpensive model and kind to novices like myself, and I found it immensely useful on a couple of recent trips that involved navigating cities on interstates. If you need just need the basics, this is a good buy, and overall I am… read full review »

I bought this product with the hopes that it would help with cutting down my time to prepare for trips by having to look up directions and print them out. The biggest problem was having to always remember to take the direction with me and hope that our plans didn't change or that we didn't choose to go somewhere else. We have found the Tom Tom GPS to be a great help and also rid us of the stress of missing turns or having directions that are wrong. We have found that our travel is unlimited and also has allowed us to make our plans when ever we want. This product has been depenable and also… read full review »

We have the tom tom xl-s which just uses language to give directions. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE it. My husband uses this daily for work and we both use it during the weekends for outings. It has a large touch screen and is very easy to learn to use. The maps were easy to upgrade and are just as accurate as mapquest, with the exception of some very new subdivisions or re-named streets. This machine even knew when streets were one-way and was able to give directions around that. We are able to program our points of interest and it will even re-map/calibrate if you decide to take a different… read full review »
