TomTom - One GPS Navigation System —

Years ago my son bought a GPS unit for hunting.  I thought it was a good idea if he ever got lost in the woods but for some reason it never dawned on me that a GPS unit would also help geographical challenged me!  Getting places without getting lost is not one of my talents.  Maybe that is why I have always driven small cars so that the turning radius will help me maneuver those quick U-turns! When I went into the city [New York that is] with a group of friends last fall I saw first hand how wonderful a GPS unit could be.  It was then I decided I needed one.

After reading reviews and researching units online I decided to purchase a Tom Tom One [3rd edition].  It is a basic, no-frills unit that fits my needs to a T.  The unit sets up quickly and I was ready to go in no time at all.

There are too many features to mention and many I have not tried.  I was concerned that the 3.5 inch screen would be too small to read while driving but it has been fine.  The unit has several voices to choose from and several language choices.  I chose a deep voice male named Richard. He speaks clearly and at whatever volume I choose.  [Does that mean I now have a Richard Richard?] Richard gives my plenty of warning before needing to turn.  He can't give me street names but with a little familiarity we worked that out just fine.  I like the fact that I can program my route, find points of interest along the way and even change my route as I go if I change my mind.

The one feature I don't like is the speed warning.  My foot is too heavy and it got a bit annoying to hear the bell go off every so often however I unchecked the option and all is well.

All in all I am very happy with this unit. I think I may just lose my title of "U-Turn Queen"!

As I used to state while driving a truck OTR (over-the-road) I never get lost...just temorarily misplaced. Try making a U-Turn with 53 feet of trailer behind you. Too bad GPS units weren't around then.

Cute! You should be in marketing...

I don't have a GPS but I don't travel very often into unfamiliar territory. I didn't know you could pick the voice and that they will alarm if you speed. I wonder if they have an Elvis choice--it could say "thank you very much" after you make the correct turn!

Terrific review. We have a Magellan, and it is like having someone hold my hand through the whole trip!

I absolutely need one of these. I know one direction to places and if there is a detour--I'm lost!

Yeah, I have a cheapo phone that doesn't have that feature. Unfortunately, I just got the phone this past summer. My next phone will most definitely have it though!

The speed warning would probably scream at me, in Eddie Murphy's voice, "HEY!! M@#$#$# F#$#$*!!! I SAID, slow the F#$#$ down!!!!!". Thanks for the review. I've been using the GPS on my phone and I like that.

Sounds like this is a great thing for you considering how much you travel. Maybe I should get one just for the male companionship while I drive! hehe ;+) ~Gigi
