All my life I have gotten turned around and lost so many times it became a running joke. In January I got a TomTom One 3rd edition GPS device and I love it. My son's family lives in the Washington DC area and when I visit, I can navigate around the entire area with confidence now.
What I really enjoy is that I do not have to try driving looking at written directions. I can pay attention to traffic. I can glance at the TomTom and know what is coming up next. I have it set to alert me when turns or changes are coming. It announces the street name or upcoming route change 2 miles before, then again at 1/4 mile, and then at 500 feet. It is so nice to have a navigator!
Another feature I like is that you can have it alert you if you are speeding. I am notorious for being a lead foot and I have not received a speeding ticket since I began driving back in 1973, I'd really like to keep it that way. TomTom certainly had helped me with keeping the speed down. Saves gas too.
The Points of Interest feature is super too. You can find nearby restaurants, museums, schools, hospitals, ATMs, stores, malls, etc. Really helpful when traveling and you don't know the area or when some attraction is in a remote area.
Periodically I hook into the TomTom website and it will download any changes that have been made to the navigational information.
I would recommend getting the car charger because the battery won't get you to a destination over 1 1/2 hours.
There are times when TomTom will take you around your elbow to get to your thumb, but it gets you there nonetheless. It could be made better if routes could be customized. Although there are some options for changing the route, you often can't bypass a particular road.
I honestly don't know how I got along without it before. It has saved me so much time and travel anxiety. TomTom was well worth its price. I look forward to future affordable models.
