I have two series 1 tivo's at home. The best thing about the series 1 is that you don't have to have a subscription to use it. I use it just like a vcr. I manually setup the times and channels to record and it just does it. The only problem with the series 1 is that it isn't supported hardware anymore. So the daylight savings law change really messes things up sometimes. They did create a patch for series 1 tivo's but it may work and it may not. During this last time change, one tivo updated correctly but the other did not. You can still get series 1 tivo's on ebay for $31 without a hard drive. But you have to be able to add the drive and image it by yourself. Not for the faint of heart!
