TiVo - Digital Video Recorder Review Summary

TiVo puts you in control of your television. You can record your favorite TV shows on a regular basis or record a movie you’ve been dying to watch but never manage to find playing when you’re at home to watch. As one TiVo reviewer notes, you’ll get much more bang for your TV buck with a TiVo. “The more you spend on a cable lineup, the more sense it makes to have TiVO catching all the shows you're paying to have access to.”

TiVO Digital Video Recorder — TiVO sets you free, allowing you to watch any show when YOU want to watch it. It records your programs digitally, and saves them on a hard drive. It has lots of other tricks that are unbelievably cool, and it's all for a small monthly fee, plus the cost of… read full review »

While shopping at Best Buy one day 8 months ago I saw a Tivo For $189.95 with a full rebate if I signed up for Tivo within 30 days. I came home and did some research on Tivo and found the service to be appealing and it would serve me well as I sometimes have to choose between 2 shows I like. So a few days later when I had some errands to run I went and bought the TIvo.      — —     Hooking up your Tivo — —     It is rather straight forward to setup the Tivo control box. You have your electrical… read full review »

We just can't believe we ever survived without Tivo!  We are a very busy family between both having jobs, kids, church activities and service, and other commitments and we just love the fact that we are able to schedule our Tivo box to record the shows we want to see and then just watch it when we want.  We don't watch a ton of TV, but having this service not only makes our viewing more flexible, but we can watch more stuff in less time because we don't have to watch any commercials.  Would highly recommend this service for people who want to be able to do more with their TV… read full review »

This was the greatest gift i ever gave myself...I got the machine itself from a radio station giveaway and almost never even hooked it up, but then I got into some show - don't remember which one, and I was going out of town and didn't want to miss an episode...so I did it.  When the free year expired, I quickly bought the lifetime subscription and it has been worth every penny and then some. I no longer have to watch third wheel or blind date or wose yet, Extra! at 1 in the morning when I can't sleep.  Once you go Tivo, you'll never go… read full review »

We have had TiVo for a while now. I firmly believe this is the greatest invention of our generation! It gives YOU complete control of your schedule! I get to decide when to watch my favorite show, I don't have to watch those pesky commercials, and my husband and I frequently let things, such as Tennessee Vols Football Games, to "get ahead of themselves", so that we can fast forward through half time! It wonderful to have the flexability to go to work, or out to eat, and know that I don't have to miss my favorite shows! No more do I have to work myself around the tv schedule, I work it around… read full review »

Awesome awesome awesome.  Once you have one you will NEVER go back.  Buy one of these instead of the DVR through cable companies just for the cute sounds!  Plus they're just overall better...one of my friends has a DVR and it just doesn't do as much.  If you're going to spend the money do it right!!  I didn't find it too hard to setup, once I got the hang of it (my husband's in the Army and we move a lot so I've done it enough I can do it in my sleep now).  I also have a DVD recorder and use it to record episodes of all my favorite shows.  I'm hooked on all… read full review »

TIVO is the best invention EVER!!!!!!!!It is my favorite possesion! Much easer and user friendly than the other DVRS.  I am reliant on my TIVO while at work and on the go!  I am  a busy person, an Every day computer user, and a woman who enjoys quality. I am a technology lover, a pet owner and expect good, fair service. I am not rich, but am technically savvy.I am a pc-and mac user.I am value conscious and am impressed with this product, and glad to have it. I am willing to pay for quality service. My Tivo knows me. There are certain shows I watch regularly. On occasion, the show has a 2 hour special. No problem, Tivo records it and I didn't have to do a thing. Its automatic. On occasion, a show plays at a different time, no problem, Tivo records it. It also has the option to put your shows in order of priority. If there is a conflict between shows, it will record the show that I have listed as higher in priority. My shows are there waiting for me so I can go out and live life. When I am ready to be a couch potato, its ready for me. I can search for movies, comedy, sci fi shows,… read full review »

I have four Tivos in my house and can't imagine living without one.  Everyone else has listed all the great features that the Tivo has, but no one has yet mentioned the 30-second jump feature.  It's a well-known "bug" that isn't documented anywhere in the Tivo literature, but if you ask any Tivo owner, he or she will tell you the 30-second jump is fantastic!  With one push of a button, you can jump 30 seconds forward on a recorded show (or a live show if you're watching the 30-minute cache).  It can get you through an endless commercial break in just moments. —… read full review »

I hate commercials.  They are taking over television, taking more time than the program.  Tivo releases you from this bondage.  By eliminating the commercials, this cuts the amount of running time of the program. — I Tivo-record cartoons for my grandchildren, National Geographic and Travel shows for me, nature shows for all of us; really I Tivo anything that looks interesting.  Then at our leisure we watch our selection, fast-forwarding through the commercials.  — But, if we ever do want to watch unrecorded TV, we are totally spoiled and… read full review »

I have loved TIVO since I got my first one (I am now on number 3). I got the 40 hour for my Bedroom and the 40 hour for my living room. Than upgraded to 80 hours and being able to record two shows at one time. — — I was disabled 2 years ago and because of all the search features I hav found all my favorite starts, directors and movie classifications I love. I've also discovered shows I never heard of by putting in my interests. It has kept me sane during this enforced lay-down period. I also have the benefit of retrieving shows for when a friend drops by and I say "here is… read full review »

OK, so I never really got what all the hype about Tivo was about. Even though I'm a "techie," I'd always recorded my shows the old-fashioned way -- on a VCR -- and was fine with it. Then my cable company offered a deal that was too good to pass up, and it included a DVR. I liked it just fine, and it worked for me. I moved about 300 miles away, and the cable provider didn't offer DVRs. I decided to suck it up and just buy a Tivo, and lemme tell you, it's WAY more than just a DVR. My favorite feature is that you can plug in a name or whatever and it will find (and if you tell it to, record)… read full review »

My daughters bought TiVo for me last Christmas.  It came with a year's service.  At the time, TiVo had a special that allowed me to add TWO extra years for the price of ONE extra year.  That was an awesome deal.  TiVo has solved my TV viewing dilemmas for me.  Once it's set up, you can basically forget about programming things until a new season starts.  Programming two things at once, watching something while something else is recording, and having TiVo find things it thinks I might like are all the qualities I enjoy.  Being able to pause a TV show as it's… read full review »

If you don't own a TiVo, what are you sitting there reading this review for? Get off your chair and go buy one! For the all around TV watcher, this is a must have item. It allows you to watch your favorite shows on YOUR time, and you can super fast forward through all the commercials. And if your TV is on a certain channel when you turn it on, but the show is already half over, you can instantly rewind up to a half hour. We currently own two and don't know what we would do without them! My husband has rotating shifts at work and we have two kids, so the flexability it allows us is… read full review »

TIVO is the greates thing since sliced bread! It is so user friendly it beats the pants off our old DVR from direct TV. Never miss another show. ever. As busy parents we would never be able to follow any of our favorite shows without TIVO! Simple remote commands makes programming your TIVO a walk int he park. Just make sure to turn off the auto reccommend feature or your box will be filled with random shows of Tivo's design. I had to fight to convince my husband we needed it and now we fight over the remote on a pretty regular basis. I have never me anyone that regretted thier… read full review »
