Thrifty is consistent
I've used Thrifty Car Rental in countless locations across the U.S.   I have yet to have a "nightmare" experience, and have usually been more than happy.

Prices are good, Cars are clean
Thrifty generally has lower prices than many of the other rental companies (except Alamo, and sometimes National).   The cars are clean and relatively ding-free.

Libby's Hot Tip:  Always walk around your car and get the rental agent to note any damage before you depart the airport.  That way, YOU won't be held responsible!

Frequent Flier Miles
Thrifty is tied in to at least one Frequent Flier program (American) and probably more, so keep your airline membership number(s) handy when booking.   Many travel web sites, including Thrifty.com, will let you store that membership number, so you only have to enter it once.

The Bottom Line:  Libby Likes It.

Wow, that sounds like a story for Conde Nast's Ombudsman column........the magazine's troubleshooter, when travelers have been wronged. So sorry to hear of your nasty experience! Yours is a cautionary tale for those of us renting overseas....

I've only used Thrifty a handful of times, but the last time I did have a "nightmare" experience. In Costa Rica, they rented me a car with faulty brakes and they completely failed coming down a hill towards a one-lane bridge. Fortunately, nobody ended up injured, but the car was totaled and a tour bus was damaged.

Thrifty insisted that the accident was my fault, that the car and brakes were in "perfect working order" when they got it back (it was not drivable at the time) and that the accident was caused because I was unused to driving in a foreign country. I've been driving around the world for some time now, and I know when you push a brake pedal, and it goes all the way to the floor, the car should slow down.

Even more disappointing than that whole experience was that when I returned to the States, the national Thrifty company would do nothing for me. They said the Costa Rican Thrifty company was an independent franchisee, and they would not even listen to my complaint. What kind of way is that to establish a brand?

Needless to say, I will not be renting from Thrifty again.
