There Will Be Blood Review Summary

Too many themes make There Will Be Blood confusing. Yet, reviewers agree that Daniel Day-Lewis' Oscar-winning performance makes the film, a "character study of a man who remains brutal, mean, hateful, spiteful, stubborn, and capable of murder." About the California oil boom around the late 1800s, it makes There Will Be Blood an intense film. Some Viewpoints moviegoers felt a more apt name would be "There Will Be Boredom" because of the poorly written script nad the disturbing nature of There Will Be Blood. If you're looking for a more enjoyable Oscar-winning film, a better bet might be No Country for Old Men.

Bottom-Line: Despite Daniel Day-Lewis's stellar performance I would skip There Will Be Blood, at least until it releases to DVD and can be visually measured in small doses. — Be forewarned There Will Be Blood is a different kind of movie indeed.  This movie is a strange bit of film… read full review »

There is little compromise in Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood.  It's a character study of a man who remains a brutal, mean, hateful, spiteful, stubborn and capable of  murder without an ounce of remorse.    It's 2 hours and 39 minutes of brooding intensity.   It won't feel like a long movie, however, because although it takes its time it remains compelling, fascinating.  It is an unsettling film that doesn't explain itself or appease the audience in any way.   So few films do this, that it would automatically get my respect… read full review »

Although veteran actor Daniel Day Lewis gives a powerful performance in "There Will Be Blood", the movie suffers from quite a bit unnecessary violence.  Lewis' character starts off having some redeemng qualities about himself, but by the end of the movie he just totally looses his mind.  The title "There Will Be Blood" speaks for itself! — —… read full review »

The main character Daniel Plainview  (played by daniel day lewis) was a person you rather loathed from start to end and it only got worse as time wore on. He was despicable and he never got any better. It was disturbing that this character didn't move or grow but I felt for this film,  it was not necessary.  The point of the film was to make people see what happens when you live a life full of greed and excess- not caring for anyone but yourself. Everything was all about gain, a means to an end- for Daniel Plainview.     — I think that the… read full review »

This film, though technically flawless in elements of design, sound, direction, and performance, will not be for everyone. Those satisfied by mainstream moviemaking who prefer to have their characters and plots handed to them on a plate so they can sit back and passively watch without being actively engaged will not find a lot to like. But those interested in a deep character study that turns a critical eye to two of the desires that dominated this country at the turn of the last century-capitalistic greed and religious freedom-will be richly rewarded for putting three hours into a film… read full review »

My husband and frequently go out to the movies as a way of enjoying our date nights together. Recently, we chose to see the movie " there will be blood". we had seen a pre- view of it in the theater the week before and thought that it looked interesting. well friends, I am afraid that once again looks can be deceiving. the movie started out interesting enough, and the scenery was both beautiful and realistc. Unfortunetly, it was all down hill from there. Daniel was a belieable character, too believable, I think he showed the ugly side that we see in people all around us every day, the greed,… read full review »

I have only liked one other movie with Daniel Day Lewis (The Ballad of Jack and Rose-ironically also starring his TWBB costar Paul Dano) but this movie blew me away. The greed, capitalism, envy, anger, and yes, blood was captivating. Excellent acting all around and a story which will grip you and keep you riveted. A Must See and Oscar Worthy… read full review »

Was shocked by how hurtful  "father and child" were to each other. But could relate. The "preacher" was creepy and crooked (like I knew he was). It was not really clear to me if there was a Paul who sold the info to Daniel's character or if he and the "preacher" were the same son. But since the "preacher" spoke to the father about Paul then there must have been a Paul and "preacher". —  Why didn't he just bless the rig instead of having power-struggle with "preacher"? — Loved the phychology of the movie and look into the oil drilling/railroad history. Love DDL in all… read full review »

Are you kidding me. Acadamy Award film. No way. The film takes you through the California oil boom at the turn of the twentieth century. The story itself should have been retitled,"One man's slow descent into dementia." Daniel Day-Lewis is extrodinary in his portrayal, but the film is not. His conflicts with all humans turns him from one who might be envied, to one that must be pitied. Much of the film was slow moving and the tragic ending was self-evident and… read full review »

The movie starts with a landscape scenery, with music that sounded as if it were out of a horror film. Very stupid. —  The story crawled and developed slower than a turtle. Throughout the whole three hours, you are sitting there praying that this movie gets better, and it just gets worse, by the end of the movie, you feel like you were suckered into wasting three hours. I felt like the producers made this movie as a prank to movie goers. Not laughing. —… read full review »

There Will Be Blood was simply an astounding film in every sense of the word.  The storyline was intense and has you thinking the whole way through.  The ending is incredible and well done.  Every actor in the entire movie has you moved by their character.  In all, the movie is one of the greatest ever, in my opinion, and infinitely… read full review »
