My boy's loved this.  Plenty of action to get them going and it was so easy to read that they didn't fight reading at all.

It had enough interest I didn't mind reading it with them.

Character's were interesting and easy to follow and feel connected to.

If you see the movie this is only one of the 4 I think that were involved in the movie.  I liked that the movie followed the story line close enough that I didn't feel like the movie ruined us reading the book after seeing it.  Usually it's the opposite.

This is the first of a wonderful series of books about three orphans who seem doomed to live forever with a series of inept and unsuitable guardians.  It might seem as though this setting would not be appropriate for humor but the colorful characters, unusual settings, and clever plot twists make these books enjoyable for children and great "light reading" for adults.  The three orphans each have unique talents--Violet is an inventor, Klaus is an avid reader who remembers everything that he reads, and Sunny has very strong teeth that she uses to bite things.  Each of these talents helps the...

In the way a Shakespearean tragedy makes you feel better about the events of your own life while using a masterful diction, such is the case in Snickett's The Bad Beginning, the first in a long series of unfortunate events that plague his protaganists, the Baudelaire orphans. Like all in the series, this book focuses on the miserable lives of the Baudelaires in the aftermath of a terrible fire that claims the lives of their parents. In a world that seems terribly unfriendly and unjust to children, the Baudelaires learn to draw upon each other when they are faced with their new guardian - a treacherous...

The Bad Beginning is a good book, yet it is more for beginner readers, like in the second, third, and fourth grades. I'm in sixth grade, and I re-read it because there was nothing else to do and noticed many of the mistakes and flaws, yet I think it is a unique style of writing, and it was funny and serious both, which is a pretty good combination. I like the characters, plot, and the dialogue was good, but I don't think this is all that great. I would read this book.

This series of books is so creative and attention holding.  It's not complex writing but the adventures of the Beaudelaire kids makes you want to adopt them yourself.  They have so many bad things happen to them but they're so resourceful you feel like a proud parent every time they escape the clutches of the evil Count Olaf.  Great reading for kids, just make sure they know it's pretend cuz it might be scary to little ones at times.

This is an excellent story.  The author makes it easy to read, and fills in all the information on difficult words.  My neice and I are reading this together and she is really going through the book quickly.  Plus it is fun for her to have someone to talk to about the book.  His writing style flows well and is quick to read.
