You are a first-time mom.  Your body isn't what it used to be, you have a child who is totally dependent on you and your body.  Your life consists of giving this little person all your love and attention, while putting your own personal interests (and self-grooming) aside.  You don't even recognize yourself anymore.

*spoiler alert*
Amy Crane is that mom.  She is mourning her past life of being a beautiful, independent and successful young business woman in London.  She does not even feel like the same person anymore.  She is hormonal, sensitive and ticked off, but she loves her little baby girl, Evie with every ounce of her being.  This is a story that is repeated throughout the world time and again.  It is typically what motherhood can do to most of us.

That is what this novel, The Yummy Mummy, is all about.  Amy Crane is on a mission to reinvent and rediscover herself.  With the help of her new friend and mentor, Alice, she embarks on "Project Amy", a journey that takes her into the role of a "yummy mummy" (or "MILF", by American terms - look it up, I can't translate it here!), a put-together, sexy mom who has very expensive taste.

Unfortunately, for Amy, her journey raises a lot of personal issues and causes more problems than she expected.

What I Love About The Yummy Mummy
It literally made me laugh out loud!  The author's writing style is so witty and creatively expressed, that you feel you really are in the character's mind, seeing the world through her eyes.  I also love how the author threw in some subtle jokes that not everyone would catch.  Being married to a British man, I know that Brits tend to think Americans will sue for anything.  So I laughed out loud when the only American character in the book responded to Amy's disaster of an eyebrow waxing with "Can you sue?".
There was even a time in the book that I cried over a very touching scenario involving Amy and her mother.

The characters in the book are very real.  Amy is so desparate to find herself that she allows herself to be reinvented by another mom who actually turns her into someone she's not.  Thankfully, Amy figures it out all on her own, and also figures out a few things about her own insecurities that could have been resolved sooner, had she only had the courage to talk about it.

And though it could be considered a bit sappy and predictable, it has a sweet and gushy happy ending.  It's definitely "chick lit", and the type of story I can see adapted into a "chick flick".

Who Else Would Love The Yummy Mummy?
I think mostly moms, especially new ones, can appreciate a read like this.  I was going to suggest it to my husband, because it's a British novel and I thought he'd find it fun to read.  But, then I realized it would not be for him, it's so "girly" he'd probably get nauseous!
I do have to say, if you don't understand some of the British lingo, some of the jokes might get lost on you.  Still, it's not like it's an entirely different language.  If you can read this, you will enjoy this book!

I have a friend from Scotland expecting -- I think this sounds like a great gift.

Loved your review. And unfortunately, I not only know what MILF stands for, but I know a few "yummy mummies." (And I thought this was gonna be a book about candy-coated mummies, the Egyptian ones!)
