The Twilight Saga Collection —

Where to start with all that is wrong in Twilight?

Probably the biggest two problems: Edward Cullen is an abusive sexist pig, and Bella Swann is a shallow unreliable narrator. Perhaps it is best to start with Bella.

From the time we are introduced to her, we are told that Bella is not beautiful, she does not fit in, she's really smart and totally selfless and so incredibly mature. We are shown that Bella knows she is extremely beautiful (when taking stock of herself in the mirror, she refers to her paleness as being "ivory-skinned", for example). We are shown that everyone in Forks, WA immediately likes her (while Miss I'm-Going-To-Be-Miserable-Because-No-One-Will-Like-Me sneers at all of them). We are shown that Bella has already done the things her classmates are about to do. We are shown that Bella is a self-centered drama queen who judges everyone by their looks and where they come from. We are shown that Bella has a martyr complex. All of this would be fascinating if Stephenie Meyer realized there was a major disconnect between what she has told us Bella is like and what Bella actually is like. She doesn't seem to.

And that brings us to Edward Cullen, the "perfect" boyfriend. Edward Cullen is a horrible excuse for a man, and I hope and pray no daughter of mine brings home a boy like this. He treats Bella like garbage (which she, the "smart, mature" one, excuses, because he's just so darn HAWT!). He laughs at her. He picks fights with her. He is so tempted to kill and eat her that he decides he's going to spend all his time around her, because as he puts it, he's "giving up trying to control myself around you". But they still shouldn't be friends. Great guy- nothing like a boy who will give you the stink-eye one day, save your life the next, pick a fight with you and laugh in your face the day after, then physically force you into his car the next, then declare his undying love in a week, then tell you you shouldn't have anything to do with him and that you're an idiot. Edward is a busybody who can't bear to not be in everybody's private thoughts- when he can't break into Bella's mind, he resorts to stalking, breaking and entering, eavesdropping, and theft.

These books are full of toxic messages about relationships, and it's disturbing to see young girls swooning over a control freak who won't even let his "true love" make any decisions of her own. Not to mention the later books glorification of pedophilic child grooming, physical abuse, and teen suicide.
