The Time Traveler's Wife Review Summary

Meet Harry DeTamble, OOPS! He's gone again! It's hard to keep track of Harry, one of the main protagonists in The Time Traveler's Wife, Audrey Niffenegger's novel about a librarian who involuntarily travels through time and his long-suffering, justly confused wife, Clare. Harry first meets Clare when, as the result of a genetic disorder, he travels into her past. And that's just the beginning. His time travel is stress related, so he can be transported at any time, to a place and time not of his choosing. The nature of the story dictates it be all over the place in time and not necessarily a narrative that flows chronologically. This confused some readers, " It's hard to keep track of what is happening now or then or in the future." and can seem like fantasy or sci-fi to some, but, as on reviewer observed, "It is the author's writing so tenderly of her characters and their emotions that the true love story comes through, and it is much more a love story than a science fiction story" So, no matter how you feel about time travel, "The book is a poignant, touching story which I found difficult to put down". The Time Traveler's Wife is recommended by the vast majority of reviewers.

While I will agree keeping track of the characters in The Time Traveler's Wife is not always easy, it is worth the effort to keep it straight. Since the main character, Henry DeTamble is a time-traveling librarian who has more adventures jumping through his own lifetime than Indiana Jones, what's not...

The Time Traveler's Wife is a book that has been recommended to me for my book club by 3 different people.  When it was finally picked for book club, I was elated.

I dove right in, as I always do.

Boy, was I confused!

The story is about a man who time travels.  He doesn't know when or where but when...

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Time Traveler's Wife" because it was such an unconventional twist to a traditional love story.  The book follows the life span of both the Time Traveler (Henry) and his wife (Clare)...as he goes back and forth in time, while she stays grounded to the present world.  The two are able to meet a happy medium only at the mid-point of their lives, but their time together as a socially acceptable couple is short-lived at best.  The book explores the disadvantages, for example, of being a young girl hanging around with a much older man.  Because Henry has a condition...

This book has a very creative storyline.  You must be open-minded.  I listened to it in my car during my commute to work.  On several occassions, I did not want to get out of my car because I was enjoying the book so much!

Due to the nature of the storyline, I would highly recommend this book for discussion among book clubs.  I have suggested this book to several friends (I am not a book club member).

I really enjoyed The Time Traveles Wife. In fact, i read it twice, first on my own, and secondly with my book club. We all agree that we liked it a lot, though many found it confusing. I really did have to flip back and forth from time to time, espescially the first time through, to try and understand the dates and ages. It can be a bit confusing, but the story was such an intriguing read that I didn't mind it at all. I don't know quite so much about the love story concept, though it certainly is there, and certainly on my second time throuhg it did feel a bit like a heartrending roller-coaster...

It's been almost three years since I read The Time Traveler's Wife, and the story has stayed with me all that time.  Considering I've read nearly 400 books since reading it (and have a terrible memory), that's really saying something!

I don't know that I would have chosen this book on my own (I seldom read books that aren't in the mystery/suspense genre), but when it was chosen as the book of the month for an on-line book club, I was willing to give it a try, and I'm very glad that I did.

I'm not afraid to confess that I was confused at first, very confused (it's that blond thing again, I suppose). ...

If you or your gift recipient love great love stories, this is one, for sure. It is a soaring, larger-than-life love story. It's unusual, interesting and different. It's impossible to put down. I couldn't help but cry at the end, and I am not the type to completely dissolve in tears at any tear-jerker. I don't like any kind of media that just jerk at the heart for cheap thrills, and this one doesn't do that. It doesn't use the standard ol' devices for poignancy. But it does lay it on thick in terms of the sexual scenes. This couple has way more sex than any normal married couple does. And it's...

Time Traveler's Wife...

If you are looking for something to do with your wife on an off night when you don't want to think too much about the way things in the world are going this may be a very good distraction. In some ways it reminded me of H.G. Wells time machine in that the film was shot with warm colors and eveything seemed to hold forth antique images. The story was not a hard hitting one and there was very little in the way of major surprizes but that could be a very Russian thing and, if you approach the film in this way you can appreciate the issues at hand between the couple and even...

I don't have much time to sit down with a book and read, so it took me about a year to get around to reading this book. A friend originally recommended it, I forgot about it, and then she gave me a copy of the book to read while I was on vacation. And boy, am I glad that she forced it upon me! This has become one of my favorite books of all time, and I am absolutely certain that it will be regarded as a classic of early 21st century American literature. Some people will look at this and immediately say, "I don't read sci-fi," or, "I hate love stories." Well, to them, I say, "You should give it... review »

I have always been fascinated by time travel and have found it difficult to find quality books on the subject.  I was spoiled by Jack Finney and his time travel classics, "Time and Again", etc., but I have once again found a book that rises to his level.  Not only does this novel present a mind-boggling journey through time, but it also encompasses the subject of love and commitment.  Without overly-romantic nuances, the story gives a moving account of the difficulties every couple face as they get to know and love one another.  You do not have to be a time travel fan to enjoy the beauty of... review »

The Time Traveler's Wife is a truly great story about a man named Henry DeTamble who has an unusual problem of traveling through time when he is feeling stressed.  Throughout the story we see Henry's many encounters with Clare.  They first meet when Clare is 6.  Throughout Clares life she continues to have meeting with Henry in the meadow by her childhood home.  The story jumps around from past to present as Henry travels.  It can get a little hard to keep track of Henry's age and when these things are happening.  However, the story is so well written that and you become invested in the life...

This was one of the most entertaining books on time travel I've ever read, and I've read plenty (starting with the graddad of them all, H.G. Wells' "The Time Traveler").  It had well developed and sympathetic characters, enough twists to keep it interesting and came off as really beliveable, not easy with such a cliched foundation.  I have and continue to recommend this book to others that I know enjoy this genre.  One of the things I liked best is how it could easily be adapted into a screenplay (John Cusack or Jamie Foxx as the lead and Kyra Knightly as the title character) that would be well... review »

The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger, has just been made into a movie, but don't neglect to read the book! The book has a lot of backstory that they can't get into the movie. I loved reading about the main character's adventure back and forth through time. I admit there were places where I cried and not to give too much away, but I never expected the ending. It was a very fresh and complicated read. For this to be the author's first book, she really did a great job interweaving a complex ladscape that had to be kept clear with all the jumping around in time. Don't miss this book!

The Time Traveler's Wife tells the story of a married couple where the husband has chronic displacement disorder--he cannot stay in one place in time, but randomly jumps around to other points in his life.  You've read love stories and you've read books about time travel, but this book brings the two together in an entirely new way and manages to be sweet without being sappy, and clever without being too much science fiction.

If you like TV shows like Quantum Leap or Journeyman, you have to read The Time Traveler's Wife!

I love the creative story line. I really like the idea of time travel being related to a genetic flaw. Its a mix of sci-fi and romance. It's a wonderful love story and the charatecters are endearing. I was so said when the book ended. Even though the story jumps around with time travel it is still easy to follow. I gave this book to my mom and dad and they both really enjoyed it. It's a tough book to put down.  I heard that it has been made into a movie and I can't wait to see how it translates to film.
