This movie advertises that it is inspired by true events. After wasting 1 hr and 20 min of my time watching I was uncertain of what was the true event. I went online to research thinking maybe I just wasn't getting the point to the movie. This is when I discovered that the true event happened to the director in 1969 when he was a boy. Some people knocked on his door and asked if a certain person lived there. It turned out if you weren't home in the neighborhood that night you got robbed. There were no killings or torture. His inspiration for the horror part is Helter Skelter. The films production budget was only 9,000,000.00 and you can tell. In an interview with the director Bryan Bertino he stated he was impressed with the theories that were circulating about what the true event could be. Again misleading! If I hadn't seen the advertisement for the based on true event I would not of had a disire to watch the movie. I could of waited until it was on cable and watched late one night when I can't sleep. I guess kudos for Bryan Bertino tricking me once but never will I watch one of his movies again.
