The Stand Review Summary

In 1978 Stephen King published a novel as polarizing as the storyline in The Stand, an uber long novel with an emphasis on character development, King treats us to a fable involving the classic struggle between good and evil. A super virus is accidentally released by the Center for Disease Control, wiping out the entire population except for a few lucky (or were they?) humans who had a natural immunity to the bug. An ambitious effort in storytelling, King created vivid characters who form clearly, or maybe not so clearly delineated alliances, as two groups of survivors form, picking up stragglers along the way. The build up leads to a grand fight that will determine the course of the world. Some complained the story was TOO deep, but later concluded "The detailed character development that was once a hindrance to my progress changed over to understanding near the end of the book.". Bringing a world awash with rotting corpses and bleak, barren landscapes to life, "Stephen King created an apocalyptic scenario that is believable and terrifying"

The Verdict: I'm so glad I finally got through The Stand by Stephen King.  It was extremely long and detailed but is also a great story.  I'm glad I kept reading and didn't give up.

Just the Facts: The U.S. military accidentally releases a highly contagious and mutating flu virus that spreads across the nation very quickly and kills off 99% of the population of the world.  The few survivors feel compelled to travel and find each others along the way.  They're also all having similar dreams which lead them to Las Vegas where the evil is or Nebraska where the good is.  What results is a classic...

I have to admit~The Stand by Stephen King is my absolute favorite book.  And why?  People complain that it's too long, that it takes too much time to read, that maybe he develops the characters too much or too little.  Well, what's wrong with length?  I personally think that the unexpurgated version of the book is the best.  Stephen King leaves in only what's necessary for the plot and the story to unfold...and he makes it unfold in a way that leaves me, at least, glued to every page until I finish reading it, no matter how long it takes.

The plot is classic~good versus evil.  But it has...

I read this book many years ago and I still remember the story, plot and characters as if I just read it yesterday.

I think the reason I liked this book so much was that I was able to easily relate to the characters.  The fear that the story line created was the believability that the Government could actually creat a super virus, that could accidentally get out of the lab and infect people very quickly thru casual contact.

You have to read all of it until the end, because you need to know if good wins over evil.  It is a very big book, do not try to read it while lying done you will hurt...

The Stand, Stephen King's apocalyptic view of society is one of the best read a person can invest their time in.

Not only is the plot well developed, but the development of the characters is impeccable.  They have depth and individual identities; in an age when character are homogenized and they all mesh together the reader will remember these characters long after finishing the book.

The plot contains the usual supernatural elements King is known for - with an added supernatural element - God.  If this bothers you I would have to ask why.  If a person can "suspend" belief long enough to entertain...

I wasn't disappointed in this book.  It is a good example of how King has good vs evil in his books.  He has a subtle way of showing people how good can overcome evil no matter what the situation is.  This was a book I wanted to keep reading.  It was hard to put it down.  Just when you think evil will prevail, good sneaks in and overcomes it.  True fans of King know what I am talking about.  If you want suspense and excitement then read "The Stand."

I have read The Stand more times than I can remember and it still keeps me on the edge of my seat and unable to put it down.  Stephen Kiing created an apocalyptic scenario that is believeable and terrifying.  His characters have depth and credulity and his plot is convoluted and yet all of a piece.  I feel that this is his best work of all time.

I love King, and this book is not for light hearted readers. I read it in 4 days and loved it.
I reread it occasionally. It is one of the few books that makes me stop and think. So if you like horror fiction and to stop and think then I would highly reccomend this book.

I like alot of his books but the stand is my favorite.  Stephen King has been writing for a long time.  After reading all of his books, and owning all of his books, I haved picked "The Stand", as my favorite book.  I think that it depicks the good and the evil aspects of life pretty well.  I know that it is out there, but not that far from every day reality.  If you have read the abridged version, than you really should go back and read the unabridged version.  There are alot of extra pages to it, but I think you will find it worth the extra time to read it. I also liked the movie that came...

Stephen King is my all time favorite author.  The book The Stand is my favorite book that he has ever written.  I have 75% of Stephen King’s books and love most of them.  His newer ones are not as great but his older ones have the greatest style.  While The Stand is quite long I have read it so often that I will soon have to buy a new one because I have worn it out.  I have even bought the movie and while it does not do it justice, it is one of his better produced movies.

What happens is that the government releases a super bug “accidently” and 98% of the world gets sick and dies. ...

I love almost everything by Stephen King, but I put off reading this because it was so long.  As an English major at the time, I had a lot of reading and writing to do so I found it hard to get into really long novels for pleasure.  I am however a compulsive reader  and found myself in a situation where this novel was the only thing around to read.  I started it and found myself unable to put it down.  It was fantastic and well worth the time it took to read it.  I always think a book is really good when I find myself wanting more after it is over.  that was the case with this novel.  I... read full review »

I read the book and saw the movie too! (I haven't found the T-shirt yet) lol! Now, seriously, "the STAND "by Stephen King  is an awe inspiring book/movie! I really I'm a fan of his reading. It is one topic that really grabs ahold of you and really makes you think! It reminds you that you should live your life on the straight and good cause you never know what tomorrow will bring! I recomend this book on many levels! It is one of his all time best writings. It is not one of the fly by night quick readers but, it is definately worth the reading.

SINCE I HAVE READ ALL OF STEPHEN KING'S BOOKS, YOU MIGHT THINK I LOVE THEM ALL. THE STAND RATES ABOVE THE DARK TOWER SERIES (WAY ABOVE) BUT BELOW SUCH PERSONAL FAVORITES AS THE GREEN MILE AND ALL OF HIS SHORT STORY COLLECTIONS. THE CHARACTERS ARE VERY WELL DEVELOPED AND THE STORY FLOWS ALONG NICELY, IF A BIT SLOWLY. THIS IS A BOOK I HAVE READ ABOUT A HALF DOZEN TIMES AND IT IS DIFFICULT TO PUT DOWN ONCE YOU START.  IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH STEPHEN KING, I WOULD RECOMMEND DIFFERENT SEASONS (AND PARTICULARLY RITA HAYWORTH AND THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION.

Stephen King's book The Stand is absolutely phenomenal.  The story is a classic tale of good versus evil.  I could not put the book down, except for to sleep.  It kept me riveted and on the edge of my seat.  His (King's) description in certain sections is unbelievable.  I enjoyed this thoroughly and would recommend it highly.

This is by far one of the best novels EVER written. I read it for the first time when I was 14 and I credit it and Anne Rice for making me a true book lover. If this book looks daunting to you because of its size, especially the extended version, dont let it bother you. This will keep your attention so well that its size doesnt matter.

One of Stephen King's best book.  For anyone who loved this book, they would also love Robert Mccammon's book "Swan Song".  It is very similiar to "The Stand", but just as good or possibly better.
