My day is set it stone, and I can tell you now that I don't have much extra time. In the morning, I have exactly 2 minutes to grab my shoes and head out the door. At 7 AM, I can't just skip breakfast. I've learned that if I skip breakfast, I'll snack like crazy until I feel full, skip lunch as a result, and snack the afternoon away.
First I tried oatmeal at work - it was nice for the first 3 months, but after that it just gets old. I needed something new, and powder SlimFast seemed to work. Plus it's really made me conscious of what goes INTO my body and how my body uses it.
As a breakfast, Slimfast is really fun. It's a nice alternative to those of us who...shall we say...don't like getting up earlier than we have to. I can't tell you how many times I've cut it to the wire all the sake of 5 extra minutes of sleep! Whether you use powder or pre-made, it's not hard to make.
As a diet, Slimfast has it's flaws. I'm not one to believe in meal substitutes for many reasons. And while I have lost weight by drinking one SlimFast each morning, I'm betting it's more on the method of keeping a food diary and tracking my daily nutritional intake. SlimFast may be a great way to get STARTED on weight loss, but as a long-term diet plan it's not healthy.
Pros of POWDER SlimFast:
1) Cheap(er): It's about $6 for about 2 weeks of breakfasts (for me at least). That's MUCH better compared to the $7 for 6 premade cans.
2) Easy: Pour milk, mix in, go: It doesn't take a genius. You just need milk, a 10-oz cup, SlimFast and something to stir.
3) More of a breakfast than Carnation Instant Breakfast:
SlimFast Nutrition Facts (SlimFast High Protein in Powder form):
- Calories: 200
- Fat: 3.5 g
- Carbs: 13 g (the aim at breakfast is no more than 45 g)
- Fiber: 4 g
- Sugars: 6 g
- Protein: 7 g (keeps you feeling full longer)
Carnation Nutrition Facts
- Calories: 130
- Fat: 0 g
- Carbohydrate: 27 g
- Fiber: 0 g
- Sugars: 18g
- Protein: 5 g
In nearly everything, SlimFast comes out as a breakfast that will last until lunch.
4) Easily digested (especially in powder form): I can't say I've ever noticed a problem with digestion of the powder form. Because you can make it with REAL milk, you know what goes into it.
Cons of POWDER Slim Fast:
1) It does take some time to mix up: You can just grab and go, unless you make it the night before. It takes between 2-3 minutes to stir AND you have to make sure you use at least 9 ounce cup. It requires 1 cup/8 oz of milk, and let me tell you - you need a larger cup to mix it.
2) Doesn't always take you to lunch: For me it lasts a little over 3 hours before I'm starting to get hungry. I've noticed though that it does last me longer than some breakfasts.
3) Not always satisfying: If you want a donut, let's me honest - you're going to want a donut no matter what. Nothing is going to distract from that, and just drinking something can make it seem less like a meal. I always try to make it last at least 10 minute OR make it with ice into a shake. Fool your urges.

Pros of PRE-MADE SlimFast:
- Convienent: How easy is it to grab and go? Plus you get 11 ounces compared to the 8 with the powder form.
- No globs of unmixed powder: It goes down smooooooth
- 10 less calories, 8 more grams of protein and 1 added gram of fiber: how awesome is that?
Cons of PRE-MADE SlimFast:
- Not as easy to digest: Within 30 minutes of drinking the pre-made stuff, I end up running to the bathroom. It's not BAD, just inconvienent.
- Doesn't taste quite like chcoolate milk: in some ways, it just tastes like it's commercially made. There's no milky taste to it.
- It MUST me cold: Warm SlimFat is just disgusting. You have to remember to put it in the fridge; even warm SlimFast with ice cubes is disgusting.
- Costly: $7 for a week's worth of SlimFast adds up quickly. By that method, you'll spend nearly $400 a year on SlimFast alone!
- Advertisement: There's nothing quite like bringing a SlimFast to work and knowing that everyone KNOWS you're dieting.
In the end, I have found that it works for me VERY well as a breakfast. Regardless of what I method I use, I enjoy the ease of use. There are quite a few flavors, but generally I've always just stuck with what I know best - chocolate!
