After 18 years on the tube, The Simpsons finally got their own movie. It was all that and a case of Duff. The fan boys were worried that,

A. The Simpsons' time had passed and,
B. the film would not live up to expectations and hype.

Their fears were groundless. Sure, there were some grumblings that Homer and his clan aren't as good as they were in 1989, when the series debuted. To those people I say, I'm pretty sure your wives and girlfriends think YOU aren't as good as you were ONE year ago, yet, they stay with you, hoping you will revist your glory days one more time.

That's just happened here. Matt Groening has taken his creation, the most yellow family in America (whereever THAT is), and made them movie stars. From the opening salvo, which starts, as many Simpsons episodes do, with Itchy and Scratchy and moves right into ridiculing the very audience who came to see them, Homer and the gang keep up a relentless pace. They bombard us with very funny, sometimes shocking jokes, all the while diving deeper into the characters than they ever have on TV. And yes, Virginia, there IS a plot.

Seems Homer, maybe the most sympathetic dumbass ever, starts a series of events involving his newly adopted pig and its droppings that draw the ire of the Environmental Protection Agency. This causes Springfield to be ostracized in a rather unique way and Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie to be vilified. They manage to escape to Alaska, only to get shocking news that breaks up the family.

As I said before, the jokes come fast and furious in typical Simpsons style and range from the stupid to the religious and politically satirical. Almost all of it works. One of the best gags (which I won't give away here) involves Homer and Marge in a Disney-like scene with forest animals.

What has made the Simpsons work all these years, though, is that, even with all the pranks, satire, buffoonery and a huge cast of well-loved characters, the Simpson FAMILY remains its very core. They have something most other toons do not, heart. And they have it in spades.

There are moments approaching actual pathos here, and it's this heart that gives this laugh-a-minute film its cohesiveness. Homer Simpson may be the second dumbest man on the planet, (I think Chief Wiggum takes first place), but nobody loves his family more, and, in the end, he does what he must to keep them together.

The Simpsons Movie is not the , "Best. Movie. Ever.", but it just might be, "Best. Movie. of 2007."
