I catch an episode of the Simpson here and there or re-runs, but I am not exactly a fan. The show is usually entertaining though and I have no problem watching it and even occasionally giggle, but if it wasn't for my kids I probably wouldn't have got to see the movie, but son wouldn't stop asking to see it, so finally I gave in.
The Plot
The lake in Springfield has become extremely polluted, so polluted in fact that it is beginning to affect the town of Springfield environmentally and eventually personally for the residents. Lisa Simpson takes this pretty seriously and eventually with the help of a cute new boy in town who also is environmentally aware and they along with the mayor, convince the town to clean up the lake and stop dumping there. Everything is working out great.
Meanwhile Homer has found himself a new friend, a pig that he names Spider Pig. Much to Bart's dismay Homer fawns over his new pet. Bart is jealous because he is beginning to feel that he would rather have a caring and nurturing father like Flanders (their next door neighbor). Homer is actually a little responsible about his new pet and builds a silo to keep his waste in. He also sets off to do the responsible thing, and begins to take the silo to be emptied in the appropriate city dumping area. But Homer is not the sharpest crayon in the box, and when an opportunity for free food comes around he forgets all about being responsible, and dumps the silo (complete with his name on it) into the lake.
The Silo and waste inside of it cause the lake to become completely off balance and the EPA decides that the town of Springfield is just too toxic for the rest of the country to stand, so they put the entire town of Springfield under a glass dome, where no one can get in and no one can get out.
The town of course finds out who is responsible for causing the devastation to the lake and they set out to rip Homer limb from limb. Lucky for Homer and his family their baby has found a sink hole in her sand box, and the family manages to find their way out of the dome, leaving the rest of the town of Springfield to deal with living in a dome, and being virtually separated from the rest of the world.
Now the Simpson family has become a group of fugitives and they must leave their home behind and make a new life. But, will they do the right thing and try and go back and save the town that Homer destroyed? I guess you will have to see it, to find out.
My Thoughts
There are a couple of in-appropriate parts and they come up to quickly to cover the kid's eyes but they go by quickly, and my kids actually thought those parts were completely hilarious. It was not anything that would scar them for life, so I wouldn't let that stop you for letting yoru kids watch the movie, most of the movie is clean.
Like many people I felt that the movie would be just a longer version of an episode, but I have to honestly admit that I enjoyed it. It had a full story line and full plot, and I actually found myself laughing a lot more than I expected to. The story line was of course not really realistic but it was fully rounded out and seemed to make sense at the time. There are even touching moments in the story, and you see that the Simpson's really do love each other. But of course there is a lot of madness and silliness going on in the movie but it actually works and was entertaining to hold both my kids attention and mine.
