I encountered this book when I was living in Guyana.  My roommate had asked a male friend to bring down some books for us to read.  He picked this one up at a bookstore because he thought from the cover that it looked like a chick book.  Boy was he right.  And how thankful I am that he did pick it because it has become one of my all-time favorite books.  (Along with Poisonwood Bible by Kingsolver and Traveling Mercies by Lamott to give you an idea of what I like).  I gave this book to my god-daughter when she graduated from high school.  It's set in South Carolina and centers around Lily,... review »

If you liked Kaye Gibbon's "Ellen Foster" then Lily Owens will capture your heart. When her father, T. Ray, punished her by making her kneel on grits, I immediately knew that she was a survivor and he was a coward. May, June, and August Boatwright, the beekeeping sisters, and their Black Madonna honey were exquisite. May's tortured soul taught me about empathy gone awry. Sue Monk Kidd's strong southern storytelling skills are reminiscent of Reynolds Price and Harper Lee. In this her first novel, the writing isn't perfect but it tugged at my heart. The characters, the time period and the small town... review »

The Secret Life of Bees has become one of my new favorite novels. Since I live in the south far away from my family who lives in the north we all read books together and discuss them over the phone. My grandma sent me this book and was especially pushy that I read it. I got past about the first chapter and put it down and then didn't read it for a few months because it started off slow and was a little depressing, but my Grandma persisted, called me up and insisted that I finish reading it. So I did and I'm really glad that I listened to her. We discussed it in great detail when I was done and... review »

Alot of people may not have heard of The Secret Life of Bees until the movie came out, and that is a terrible thing because this book is one of my favorites! This book will touch your heart and I guarantee you will find something to relate to. I never had a great relationship with my mother, or with other women in general and this book opened up alot for me. Its full of stories about love, life, and enjoying the little things you do have. From a little girl standing up to abuse, to a black women fighting for her right to vote for the first time, there are so many things in this book that empower...

This story was well written and made me want to keep reading. I did things a little differently with this book. I seen the movie then read the book. I knew if I seen the movie first I would be disappointed since that is how it always is when they turn books into movies. I wasn't disappointed at all with the way the movie was compared to the book. Both made me cry, which isn't hard to to do at the moment. I loved the story about Lily trying to find out who she is and learning about her mother. The path she takes and story that comes with it. A must read if you enjoyed the movie read the book,...

I admit I'm not a big reader.  I had to read this book for one of my college courses and I absolutely loved it!  I am very picky when reading books, I don't get engaged easily.  This one keeps you interested the whole way through.  I enjoyed it thoroughly and I would think any girl would enjoy it.  It's just a great book, what else can I say!
