The Secret Life of Bees —

I encountered this book when I was living in Guyana.  My roommate had asked a male friend to bring down some books for us to read.  He picked this one up at a bookstore because he thought from the cover that it looked like a chick book.  Boy was he right.  And how thankful I am that he did pick it because it has become one of my all-time favorite books.  (Along with Poisonwood Bible by Kingsolver and Traveling Mercies by Lamott to give you an idea of what I like).  I gave this book to my god-daughter when she graduated from high school.  It's set in South Carolina and centers around Lily, a teenager who runs away with her black caretaker, Rosaleen.  Lily is searching to learn more about her mother who died when Lily was young.  In their search, they end up staying with three beekeeping sisters.  It is a powerful and moving story that celebrates the bonds between women.
