I'd heard a lot about the film The Searchers over the years and finally got to see it. Made in 1956 by legendary director John Ford, The Searchers is a tale of dogged persistance by an otherwise hard-to-like character.

Beautifully shot in Monument Valley, Arizona, The Searchers features all the western scenery you could want. Throw in bad indians, a torched homestead, horses, colorful characters and a couple of pretty women, and you have all the fixings of a fine western. And The Searchers is a fine western, just not a likeable as it could be.

The Searchers (1956)

John Ford
teamed up with John Wayne to make one of the greatest westerns in history, the story of a man who would not stop searching for his lost niece, no matter what.

John Wayne stars as Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran who returns to his Texas home on the eve of an Indian massacre. While the men are drawn off by a ruse following supposed cattle rustlers, the Comanches swoop down and kill all the kin folks Ethan has. There are indications the Indians have taken the two young daughters captive and Ethan resolves to track them down.

 I came to appreciate this movie after many viewings.  I didn't want to like ANY John  Wayne movie all that much, but then I saw gems like  Tie a Yellow RibbonRio BravoThe Man Who Shot Liberty ValanceThe Shootist  and then there is this;  the ultimate John Wayne classic with Wayne giving an atypical performance.  It's a downright risky one because it is very difficult to like Ethan Edwards.  He's a racist who truly despises Indians and is being eaten alive by the believe that his kidnapped neice (Natalie Wood has been raped by a savage.   He is conflicted between rescuing... review »
