While I was doing research for a science article I was writing, I surfed the web and landed on the beach of thescienceforum.com. The posts I read were helpful and I decided to join the site to check it out further.
The site's graphics are somewhat stoic and while navigating the site I had trouble finding links to get where I wanted to go, but for the most part, I was able to read articles, leave comments and post a couple of articles.
The community...eh hem...how can I put this delicately? Have you seen the movie "Children of the Corn"? Or how about "Animal House"? Don't get me wrong there are some decent folks there at The Science Forum, including the owner of the site whom I had a pleasant chat with when I was making a complaint against an extremely rude moderator.
Can trolls be moderators? Apparently they can. It was my hope that this was a community where other members and I could carry out deep and meaningful (and courteous!) discussions and debates about various science topics. Instead I got the moderator from hell!-- who did not think the rules of conduct should apply to him and his very rude buddies.
By contrast he fully expected me and other newbies to walk on eggshells. Not exactly what I was hoping for. The good news is the owner of the site was able to recognize unfair treatment when he saw it, and the moderator from hell will be replaced.
More good news is that the site has an "ignore" feature where you can place the Children of the Corn.
In conclusion, thescienceforum.com has interesting reading material and will let you post your thoughts. There are also some decent people to chat with--but watch out for the children...and that ugly scarecrow.
