The Scarsdale Diet —

If anybody remembers Dr. Herman Tarnower, it's probobably because of the scandal when Jean Harris - the well respected Head Mistress of one of the country's most elite Private Schools - drove to his house, shot him six times and then said she was trying to commit suicide.

But in 1979 he was a private cardiologist who used his experience in cardiology to write  The Scarsdale Diet. Within a month of the book's publication it was a best seller.

It promised that you could eat healthy meals, never feel hunger pangs and still lose up to twenty pounds a week. It sure promised a lot but guess what, it delivered.

It was easy to follow because there was a menu for every meal for fourteen days. You knew exactly what to shop for, how to prepare it and what time of day to eat it. It was a two week on/two week off rotation.

It eliminated most carbohydrates but there were daily exceptions for limited amounts of bread and fruit. The Scarsdale Diet was high protein and very little fat. You could eat unlimited amounts of veggies like celery, raw carrots, etc.

You really could eat until you were full so there were no hunger pangs. All these years later I remember my first meal - delicious roast beef served cold, stewed tomatoes served hot and club soda. I lost 15 1/2 pounds in two weeks. I never felt deprived so I never cheated on the diet.

There was no alcohol allowed while you were on the Scarsdale Diet - you could have water, club soda and diet soda. You were also allowed to have tea and coffee with no milk, cream or sugar.

This was a great diet if you had no dietary special needs. It could be dangerous for diabetics or people with blood problems. It was also very low in fats - almost dangerously so.

I can honestly say that The Scarsdale Diet backs up every claim it makes and if you are looking for a diet plan, I heartily recommend this one.

You can find the book at almost every on line book store and stores like Barnes and Noble can special order it for you. You can even find menus just by going on line.
