Here's an under-rated litlte gem of a movie that the whole family will enjoy.
Imagine if Jean Shepherd (who wrote the stories that A Christmas Story was based on) wrote a story about a group of young boys who play pick-up baseball in a field.
The simple premise is the basis for a whole series of comic misadventures involving the kids who just want to play baseball as much as possible in the sandlot.
Young Scotty is new the neighborhood, trying to make friends and organizes a baseball game even though he knows very little about playing baseball. There's friendly Benny, the obnoxious chubby Ham and Squints a wanna-be ladies man.
Scotty winds up using a Babe Ruth autographed baseball and wouldn't you know it... the baseball eating junkyard dog owned by James Earl Jones get the ball and the kids have to devise a plan to get it back.
It all takes place in 1962 with nice period details and soundtrack.
4 1/2 stars for this little gem.. rounded up to 5. Don't miss it.
