read full review »Cormac McCarthy's novel, The Road, is not something that I would ever have picked up off of the shelf on my own. One of the bartenders at our favorite watering hole and I have been talking and sharing books for several months. His contribution to our informal little "book club" was lending me his copy of The Road. To be honest, if I didn't know he was going to ask me what I thought of it, I probably wouldn't have even finished it... but I'm glad that I did.

read full review »I will read the occasional post-apocalyptic book if a trusted friend or reviewer tells me it's worth my time and will cause me to think a little deeper.
I have not returned to other such novels: On the Beach, The Stand, others.
Think of it this way: I saw Silence of the Lambs. I saw Road to Perdition. I am glad I saw them both. They gave me a lot to mull. They stick with me and change me. This is what good art does.
But I will never see these films again; they are too dark, the hard parts just too hard, to endure again.
