The Road is an Oprah Book Club selection by Cormac McCarthy. After reading it, I can see why she chose it. It is very well written with clear and vivid descriptive detail.

The basis of The Road is a father and son traveling the ash-covered earth. There is no reason given why they are some of the last...

In preparation for my one of my last trips out of town with my job, my thoughtful wife bought me a copy of The Road, having seen Oprah give it a "rave review" on her show. Knowing that I would be spending many hours in my hotel room, she wanted to give me a "good book" to help pass the time.

As I began...

The Road
By Cormac McCarthy

A father and son, neither of them named, travel south across a scorched and empty landscape that was once America. McCarthy's post-apocalyptic setting is a dying world seemingly devoid of hope. The story takes place ten years after an unspecified and almost entirely unexplained event brought a fiery end to civilization.

Only two brief flashback scenes take the reader back to the moment of destruction, which might have been a nuclear war, or possibly a series of meteor strikes, or something else entirely. There were explosions, the power went out, and everything began to...

Cormac McCarthy's novel, The Road, is not something that I would ever have picked up off of the shelf on my own.  One of the bartenders at our favorite watering hole and I have been talking and sharing books for several months.  His contribution to our informal little "book club" was lending me his copy of The Road.  To be honest, if I didn't know he was going to ask me what I thought of it, I probably wouldn't have even finished it... but I'm glad that I did.

The Road is commonly described as a "post-apocalyptic tale" that follows the progression of a father and son as they walk their way...

I will read the occasional post-apocalyptic book if a trusted friend or reviewer tells me it's worth my time and will cause me to think a little deeper.

I have not returned to other such novels: On the Beach, The Stand, others.

Think of it this way: I saw Silence of the Lambs. I saw Road to Perdition. I am glad I saw them both. They gave me a lot to mull. They stick with me and change me. This is what good art does.

But I will never see these films again; they are too dark, the hard parts just too hard, to endure again.

This is how I meet the post-apocalyptic tale: I will face you once, take what...

I read The Road before Oprah picked for her book club and was frankly a little surprised that she did. I loved it, but it isn't the type of book I would have thought Oprah would go for. The Road tells the story of an unnamed man and his son traveling through the world after it has been decimated by war or some apocolyptic event. The story is a little tough to get into, but once you do, you'll finish the book quickly. The author makes you pull for this pair in the horrible world they live in, and in spite of the wasteland they live in, you really can see some hope and optimism through the eyes... read full review »

To say it brought me to tears would be an understatement.  The Road is a masterpiece.  It was so beautifully written that it's hard to believe it is a work of fiction, althought, thankfully it is.  One of my favorite pastimes is imagining a story as a film.  If adapted correctly and casted appropriately ( I see Russel Crowe as the father and the little boy in "The Hours" as the son) it would undoubtedly Oscar worthy.  Painful yet compelling, The Road is one of the best books I've read in many years and I read several books a year.

I loved this book. It was terribly sad but it did certainly make me appreciate my parents and the fact that there is someone out there, I know, who loves me the same way the father loves his son. I felt that his unusual writing style made the book flow very well and kept me there with the characters. Cormac McCarthy did a great job with the plot for this book as well, seeing as there are very few characters to manipulate. However, this book is not uplifting for the most part.
