The Princess Diaries (2001) Review Summary

Parents call Princess Diaries "a good movie with a good story and some good lessons." Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews star in this film of a girl who learns the truth of her father, that he is the prince of Genovia, yet has just passed away. Her grandmother, the queen, comes to visit her in the United States and works to convince her to move to Genovia and "take her rightful spot as princess." Reviewers think of Princess Diaries as a "fun fairytale," as well as "heartwarming and inspiring," comparing the story to The Ugly Duckling. Fans like that the would-be princess in the film is "so down to earth and normal." Princess Diaries is one the whole family can enjoy as Disney brings "back simple comedy with true class." It has reviewers comparing Hathaway to a young Audrey Hepburn, a comparison many have continued to make as she has gone on to star in films such as Ella Enchanted and Devil Wears Prada.

"The Princess Diaries" is the charming retelling of the often-told story of the ugly duckling who's turned into a swan. Anne Hathaway stars as Mia Thermopolis, a 15-year-old high school freshman living in San Francisco. She's a teen filled with typical teen concerns. She's having a hard time gaining acceptance from her peers. She can hardly wait to get her driver's license. Most importantly to Mia, she has a crush on Josh Bryant (Erik von Detten), the most handsome boy in her class. Her only friends in school are Lilly Moscovitz (Heather Matarazzo), and Lilly's brother, Michael (Robert Schwattzman),...

Plot
Mia is an awkward girl living with her mother in San Francisco. Right around her 16 birthday she is told that her father has passed away - and given the shocking news that he was the crown Prince of a small country called Genovia. When the queen comes to visit to try and convince her to take her rightful spot as Princess, Mia is not as excited as most young girls would be. She has settled with being invisible and just hiding in the crowd, and now they are going to tell her she's a princess???

I really love The Princess Diaries, because it is a great family story and it has a great fairytale appeal.  Anne Hathaway stars as a struggling teen who is smart, but awkward in high school and is sort of an outcast in her high school.  Her life is pretty plain until she gets word from her grandmother that she is a princess, which turns her ordinary life upside down.  In order to take the thrown, she must learn to be a princess.  This involves a huge makeover from the outside in and develops into a fun and hilarious story.  This tale is heartwarming and inspiring and great to watch.  I love... review »

The Princess Diaries is a wonderful Disney film.  It's right out of a fairy tale, like Cinderella.  A school dork as you would say winds up being a heir to a throne, only she not everything everyone expects her to be.  Amelia is frustrated with her mom for lying to her, and her Grandmother wants her to be perfect, but yet she wants to be who she is and expierence her 1st kiss.  She has a crush on her best friends brother and he on her.  She ends up becoming miss popularity and goes out with a guy who is only using her and blows off her friends.  She finds out in the end its better to be true...

The Princess Diaries is just the cutest story ever.  My daugther is 2 and half and she is also in love with this movie.  It is one of those feel good stories that appeals to both young and old.

I love that the main character, Mia, is so down to earth and normal.  It shows kids that they don't have to act a certain way or follow in with the popular crowd to be somebody special.  It just sends a wonderful message to all little girls out there.

Overall, it is just a great movie that I think the whole family can enjoy.

The Princess Diaries is true classic comedy.  Julie Andrews is superb as the elegant queen who tries so hard to bring out the beauty and grace in her young rebellious granddaughter.  Many will rejoice in the similiar comedy styling of this film to that of Roman Holiday with the delightful and elegant Audrey Hepburn.  We need more films like this to take away the harsh realities of life and put us in a kinder gentler place.  Every home should have this movie to be enjoyed by all ages and share the lessons within.

Princess Diaries is a great movie! Its funny, charming, and a heartwarmer! Everyone should see it! The main character's travel from the high school nobody, to a princess is touching. She learns not to forsake who she was for who she is becoming. There are times when Mia feels that the popularity is more important than her old friends. In the end she figures things out and everything works out. There is now a second Princess Diaries so if you liked this one, you will be sure to like the next one!

The Princess Diaries is an adorable story about an awkward girl who transforms into a woman - a story that is relateable to young girls everywhere. I love Anne Hathaway, and she was so cute as an awkward teenager. And Julie Andrews is just perfect; she is really ageless! This is a great family movie, and has uplifting themes that make this movie really worth watching.

The Princess Diaries is a very interesting and funny movie. It has a very great story and the characters just make the whole story fit it together. The characters are funny. The movie setting is also wonderful, especially the scenes of San Francisco city life.
