The Princess Bride Review98 minutes, USA (1987), PG J
Writer William Goldman (Butch Cassidy, Marathon Man, Magic etc) wanted to write a novel for his kids and hoped it would be turned into a movie his kids would enjoy.
It's an enjoyable, swashbuckling satire of a movie that has some memorable sequences and some very funny moments. I'm not sure young children will like it all the much since the leads are very bland and the supporting characters and humor is directed at adults.
A young boy really doesn't care about the story his Grandfather (Peter Falk) is readingto him.. until it suddenly comes to life.
Carol Cane and Billy Crystal steal the movie with their brief appearance, but there are very funny bits by Wallace Shawn and wrestler Andre the Giant is quite charismatic and likeable in his role.
The leads Cary Elwes and Robin Wright (now R.W. Penn) as Princess Buttercup are pretty bland and we don't care too much about them, so thank goodness there's lots of funny dialogue and entertaining situations to get lost in.
Mandy Pantkin, Chris Sarandon and Christopher Guest are quite good in their roles.
Kids over 12 and Adults will enjoy.
