Most HelpfulThe only reason I knew about this movie is because Hugh Jackman had just been in X-Men 3 and, even though The Fountain was horrific, I still wanted to know what other movies he was going to be in. I'm glad that I stumbled upon this movie.
Plot: When 2 rival magicians, Robert(Hugh Jackman) and Alfred(Christian...

Most HelpfulThe Prestige is about two friends who become enemies and competitors, each using magic tricks to jab at the other. Set in Victorian England, The Prestige is well-made and it looks great in a dark and gloomy way, but the gloom extends to the script. Loaded with a sense of foreboding, the film is ultimately...
review »I was sitting down to spend a couple hours watching what I thought might be a ho-hum drama, but surprise...an edgy ride with a not so typical ending. In fact, the whole movie is quite atypical and you might find yourself sitting through it again to replay some areas now that you "know" what was behind the scenes throughout!
Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman play rival magicians who go to extreme lengths to "out-do" the other's tricks and when one trick becomes deadly and Bale's wife is killed, the feud goes out of control. While the two continue to battle for supremacy in the world of prestidigitation,...

Smart story and good performances by everyone involved makes this a popcorn, blanket on the knees, candles and wine kind of movie. I wouldn't let the kids in on this one...a bit violent at times but not really gorey. Enjoy, ya'll!
Unlike the Illusionist that was a complete bore fest this movie is very entertaining and engaging but you have to pay close attention. My best friend was watching it and kept yelling at me, "tell me what is happening, I don't understand it" because he was trying to do other things while he was watching it.
Very well acted and thought out, not believable of course but in order to enjoy magic you have to suspend disbelief anyhow. I thought the ending was truly amazing and it was good to see David Bowie in a movie again.
I saw The Illusionist first, and while that one was visually beautiful, it was on the dull side, and so I wasn't sure how The Prestige would fare.
It fared very well, much to my pleasure. The story flowed without flaw and was worth the entire journey, not merely to reach the title element...It had the visual appeal of the time period, the characters and plot made sense and it kept me guessing. The ending was one I never saw coming and was tickled to be caught off guard by.
This film is about family and love. Every character makes a bad choice and tries to do the right thing. Hugh Jackman is great!! The movie is magical and scary. There is an older setting. There is a modern sci-fi twist to the tale. I didn't think that Hugh Jackman could be evil but this movie proves me wrong. He makes a wonderful bad guy.
