I think that I have been spoiled by Showtime's miniseries, The Tudors, because I found this book to be a bit dull in comparison.  The Other Boleyn Girl, by author Philippa Gregory is a take on the reign of King Henry VIII as told from the perspective of Mary Boleyn.  I did appreciate seeing the events unfold from her point of view, but ultimately, the story proved less than compelling.

My biggest gripe with this book is that the reader is beaten over the head with the theme that a woman's life was not her own to make life decisions.  The main characters, George, Anne, and Mary Boleyn appear to have some form of this conversation throughout the first half of the book.  Then Mary and her Uncle Howard have a different version of the conversation several more times.  It got to the point that I was rolling my eyes each time the author compares Mary to a brood mare, or as a prize won at gambling, a pawn, or whatever metaphor du jour the author fancied to repeat the same point.  Okay, we get it - women were not treated as equals.  Can we move on now?

Thankfully, the author does move on with the story at the point my attention began to flag.  She does a great job of contrasting and comparing Anne's rise and downfall to that of her predecessor, Queen Catherine of Aragon.  I felt that I learned more about the politics of living in a royal court and I breathed a sigh of relief each time Mary was able to spend time away in the simple life of the country.  The build up to the execution of Anne Boleyn is fraught with urgency and anxiety, but I felt that something was missing in the final pages.   The downside of the novel taking place through Mary's eyes is that we don't get much information as to Anne's state of mind in her final days.  And that, for me, is a let down.

Overall, I give a slight nod of recommendation to The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory.  There is a lot of interesting reading in the novel to recommend it, but there is also monotony and a lackluster ending, in my opinion.

Yah, I gotta check that out because in the movie, you don't see anything happen to me and he was HORRIBLE. If there was anybody in there I wanted to SMACK, it was him. I think you will like "Anne of a Thousand Days". While it was true that women weren't too independent back then, that Anne Boleyn gave a pretty good accounting of herself and her daughter Elizabeth was no slouch either. I'm not sure I would have been that strong in that kind of situation. I ACCIDENTALLY SENT THIS MESSAGE TWICE BECAUSE THE SEND BUTTON STUCK OR SOMETHING!

Yes, but I read on Wikipedia that Cromwell gets his comeuppance in the end! I totally agree with you...I wouldn't have wanted to be queen either! Yikes.

I'm sorry, in my haste I didn't notice that you already knew about "Anne of the Thousand Days". Genevieve Bujold did a terrific job as Anne and likewise Richard Burton playing Henry. You will end up hating the character of "Cromwell" who in my mind was the real villain of the piece. Boy, I sure wouldn't have ever wanted to be a queen!

Great review! Have you ever seen "Anne of the Thousand Days"? That was a great rendition of the same subject but told more through Anne as the protagonist.

Someone else mentioned that movie. I've never seen it, and now I'm going to have to check it out. Thanks for the tip.

The movie Anne of the Thousand Days covers some about Anne's sister. You might want to check that out. :>
