The Office Review Summary

Steve Carell, of The 40 Year Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine, Evan Almighty and Dan in Real Life, brings his unique sense of humor to the small screen in NBC’s Comedy The Office. If you have an off-beat sense of humor, you should enjoy this “mockumentary” which will “appear like a reality show, but in truth none of it is real.” The show focuses on a small business, led by Steve Carell “who charms you even as you snort in disbelief at the muddled, goofy 'logic' he uses to manage his branch of the DunderMifflin Paper Co.” Many reviewers who work in an office find the show relates closely to their real office life. Most Viewpoints reviewers agree that The Office has clever writing, however some reviewers think it “makes no sense at all”. Fans of the show explain this by saying that “at first, you may think it's stupid - but once you get to know the characters, you will truly love this show.”

I've found my favorite show. The Office is hilarious! I was hooked after the first episode. The characters are so awkwardly entertaining. I can't help cracking up each scene. I'm not sure if it's similar to a genuine office setting, but I'm glued to the TV for a half an hour feeling connected to… read full review »

In the age of reality TV shows, it's about time we have a reality TV spoof.  The Office is called a mockumentary since they make it appear like a reality show, but in truth none of it is real.  To the passer by it may seem like a lame show, but once you get to know a few of the characters, you'll really enjoy it. — The Premise — Steve Carell (Michael) leads this hilarious cast of "normal" people through their "normal" office jobs.  I say "normal" in quotes because although much of the scenario is very much like a real office job, much of it is just plain… read full review »

This show is so funny that I actually watch the reruns on TBS. I have the first two seasons on my I-pod and watch them when I travel for work. I laugh so loud on the airplanes that I get stares. The writing is incredible, the characters hilarious. Having them sell paper is inspired, an unsexy product in an industry that does not favor the independent vendor just makes the intensity of their devotion to work another quirky element of the show. This show works on so many levels that it is always fun to watch. — —… read full review »

I had heard many glowing reviews about the BBC version of The Office, and finally decided to rent season 1 on DVD. Watched it, rented the 2nd season and the Christmas Special (it was a limited series) and became an instant fan of Ricky Gervais. I thought the whole show and cast were brilliant, so naturally when they said NBC was making an American remake, I thought "oh great (sarcastic) on the whole, British humor doesn't travel well or translate well." So I resisted watching it as the iniitial reviews were fairly lukewarm as I recall. BUT this summer, on disability and with limited mobility,… read full review »

This show is too often the highlight of my week (what does that say about my life...but that's another story!)  I started watching this in the second season and quickly got hooked.  This show is a mockumentary of sorts.  Some cameramen film at the fictional company Dunder Mifflin, a paper company.  The branch manager, Michael Scott, played by Steve Carrell, is completely inappropriate, yet still somehow lovable.  Each character has his or her own quirks.  Anyone who has ever worked in an office and seen the same people on a daily basis will think of their own… read full review »

The characters are relatable and it is a “smart” and “dense” comedy all at the same time.  While it may not appeal to everyone, it is a very well thought out comedy (though I will admit it has slipped recently into more of an “obvious” humor…but I think that is only because they want to increase their viewers, which I am fine with--the more people that like it the longer it will hang around!) That’s what she said. — Now that is in re-runs because of the strike and the holiday seasons, it is a great time to catch-up and really get… read full review »

Living just 20 miles outside of the pseudo location of Scranton, PA, I can't believe I let three seasons of this show go by and just started watching it during the writer's strike!  So clever, so funny, and so great to see Steve Carrell in something so well produced that he proves humor doesn't have to be stupid to be entertaining.  The characters in this mockumentary are so diverse, you can't help but thinking you know someone just like him or her.  Anyone that has ever worked in an office can definitely relate.  Hope the writer's strike is settled soon, I need by… read full review »

I cannot recommend this show enough! If you haven't seen it, then run to Bloackbuster and rent the DVDs. Or, better yet, get over to Target or Best Buy and just buy them. You *will* want to watch them again. This is the only show I don't delete from my TiVo because I always go back and rewatch every episode several times. Just knowing that the Office is on makes Thursdays bearable. Classic lines, great actors, awesome writers . . . if you are not watching this show then you should have your head… read full review »

This is the best comedy on television, hands down! There isn't another show like it. I look forward to it every week. My only complaint is that it's only 30 mins long!!! I work in an office, and it is so fun to go to work and find the person that is most like Dwight, or Jim, or Angela! Steve Carell is one of the funniest men on earth, I love everything he's in! Jim and Pam are super-couple of the year (like Friends Ross and Rachel, only funnier!). Dwight is.....well, Dwight. He's the center of the show, you feel sorry for him....but find yourself rooting for Jim to think of another trick to… read full review »

To be honest, when I first watch "The Office" - I wasn't a fan. I just didn't "get" Michael Scott (the boss of the show - Steve Carell's character) and I thought it was nonsense. By the third episode - I was hooked. Now, I can't get enough - I am buying all the seasons on DVD AND, I am tivoing the episodes on TBS. Yes. It's that addicting. — — I tell everyone I know to give it a try - at first, you may think it's stupid - but once you get to know the characters, you will truely love this show. Especially and eventually -… read full review »

The Office is such a funny show but it's not for everyone. I really love it - I love the characters, I love the acting, I think Steve Carrell is so funny and that I've worked for him before - so I really love this show. The writing is clever as all get out (I love it that the temp Ryan becomes the Regional District Manager) - let's face it, we've all worked with quirky characters in real life before so seeing quirky on TV is funny. —  But it's not for everyone because not everyone gets the subtlety of the relationships in this show. If you like Friends (which is a very good show)… read full review »

Steve Carell is a brilliant actor.  He has not acted in a movie that I have been disappointed with.  But it's not just Steve who makes this show great.  The chemistry of the cast is something so intriguing.  Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, BJ Novak, and Paul Lieberstein are just a few outstanding performers on this show.  —  The show is about the day to day happenings in an office (hence the name) of a paper supply company. But it seems to apply to any office in America.  There's always a Micheal Scott, Dwight Shrewd, and a Jim Halpert in every… read full review »

This is by far the best show on TV currently.  Although it seems to go beyond believable, if you've ever worked in an office environment, you can honestly relate to most of the situations (even those that don't even seem plausible).  Steve Carrel is brilliant, but the show would still fail without such a great supporting cast.  The characters are all believable as real people and not stereotypes, which makes it watchable.  The drama that exists is realistic and the comedic twists never let the story get too bogged down. — Brilliant writing, as all ideas are… read full review »

This is truIy a "real life" portrayal of a day at work in an office. I recommend this show to everyone, especially those who think their job is so important and that they are liked by everyone. It is absolutely the best show on tv today. I guarantee that you will find some subject matter or character that will hit home with you in your everyday life. Go to the video store and rent the past seasons on dvd to catch up if you've never seen the show. Get ready to fall in love with the characters (YES, all of them) and laugh out… read full review »
