I had heard many glowing reviews about the BBC version of The Office, and finally decided to rent season 1 on DVD. Watched it, rented the 2nd season and the Christmas Special (it was a limited series) and became an instant fan of Ricky Gervais. I thought the whole show and cast were brilliant, so naturally when they said NBC was making an American remake, I thought "oh great (sarcastic) on the whole, British humor doesn't travel well or translate well." So I resisted watching it as the iniitial reviews were fairly lukewarm as I recall. BUT this summer, on disability and with limited mobility, I decided to just try a few episodes on the "watch it now" feature on my Netflix account. Well, I ended up watching all 3 seasons on DVD, and if anything, am an even bigger fan of Ricky Gervais, as he's a producer on the American version, and also writes the occasional episode. The American version is equally brilliant, with Steve Carell, who charms you even as you snort in disbelief at the muddled, goofy "logic" he uses to manage his branch of the DunderMifflin Paper Co, in Scranton, Pa. Rainn Wilson, who was fantastic in "Six Feet Under" has great comic chops as the boss's right hand man/whipping boy. And of course, who can resist Jam (Pam and Jim) whose starcrossed romance actually plays like a more realistic version of Ross and Rachel. The reasons they didn't iniitially get together (she was engaged, then he was involved with someone else) made sense, and yet last seaons' finale, when he came back to the office and asked her out to dinner; you saw her face respond with surprise and then that special glow that we all hopefully experience at least once in our life!
I agree, I love this show! I got into it from the very first episode, however until recently I never had time to watch. Due to the Writer's Strike, I was able to catch up on all the older episodes.
