I have been reading The New York Times my whole life. Along the way I supplemmented it with The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Chicago Sun Times, The Chicago Tribune and The Wall Street Journal. Today, I still subscribe to the last three. However, I believe that the The New York Times has the best writing of any other paper I have read. The Wall Street Journal, The LA Times and The Washington Post are the next best in my opinion.
The strength of The New York Times is their International reporting. I don't read the sports section but I know that it is considered weak. I particularly enjoy The New York TImes Magazine on Sundays. The business section is very good, but not quite a replacement for The Wall Street Journal.
However, all that said, if you forced me to choose one source for my news, it would be The New York Times. Their web site is also the best of all the others. If you are a fan of the gray lady, you should also try out The New York Times Reader. It is a desktop application that presents the paper in a more refined, graphically pleasing fashion.
I know people complain about the liberal bias of The New York Times, but I have to say, being a left leaning centrist, I don't mind the level of skew that it has. Every paper and every news outlet has an agenda. I certainly agree less with the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal.
