                                                    Summary:

This movie, "The Neverending Story," is about a young boy named, Bastian (Barret Oliver), who loves to read books. He visits an odd bookstore and after being told not to take that book, he runs out of the store with it and sneaks into the school's attic to read it throught the day. He becomes fascinated at first as he reads the book, but then he gets physically drawn into the fantasy novel. With his faith and the help of a young warrior named, Altreyu (Noah Hathaway), they struggle to save an incredible world called Fantasia from the destruction of an unknown "Nothing."

                                                            My Opinion:

I loved this movie as a kid, even though I wasn't entirely sure what the story was about. My favorite out of the whole movie was, believe it or not, when Bastian eats his lunch and continues to read the book. Funny, I know.

As an adult, I got the DVD and watched it only once. The imagination in this film is far out there that it's creepy. This movie disturbed me to the point that I don't want to watch it anymore. The movie is not that bad, but not good either.

There's one scene where Altreyu walks between two Egyptian-looking statues to get to the other side. These statues are indecent. I'm surprised they put that in a kid's movie.

I know for sure that I didn't like the second one. It stunk!

MikeMaroon wrote on Aug 10, 2009 at 12:40AM

I always called it the "Neverending Movie"..cause it bored the crap outta me!

If I remember correctly the two statues were sphynxs. They're creatures found in Egyptian and other mythologies. When my daughters were kids they thought that part was a bit scary but more exciting. They admired his courage. I liked the carpetdragon (I think that's what it's called but it's been awhile)that gives rides flying around. A lot of fantasy movies can be a bit out there. I liked it. I also liked reading your review. Go ahead and watch it again sometime.

Yeah it seems strange but the storyline seems interesting. I still want to re-watch this movie to see if I still see it the way I saw it before I posted the review or differently.

Thanks so much Jenny for posting your thoughts about this movie. :D

I grew up with a preacher father--he is still a preacher. We were given this movie on VHS when I was younger and we watched it with our parents. I guess I don't remember the statue part. My siblings and I enjoyed the fantasy adventure and after the movie my parents talked with us about what we may have learned from it. My parents were like that with most "new" movies. I don't think my children have ever watched it unless they have seen it at a friend's house. They do have it at Wal-Mart as a package with both the orig. and part 2. I have often thought about buying it but I never have. I'll get Shelton to do some research on it and then decide. Thanks for the honesty in your review!

I noticed a comment from Gigi about "Bridge To Terabithia." If you get a chance you should watch that. It is a really good movie. We got two copies for Christmas '07 or '06. Shelton's mother (Grammy) and my parents both got it for the grandkids. The children love it and it has a great storyline, some faith-based issues and is a great way to teach children how to deal with death and dying.

May the Lord bless and keep you and may you always do what your heart tells you to and not what the world says. Love to you, Anna Leigh, Shelton and family

I have some. I have loads and loads of stories that I wrote in junior high and high school, poems, you name it. I actually don't even remember the person who wrote them. That is, when I read the stuff I wrote, it seems iike I was a very different person. I guess I was much more of a dreamer and a lot more creative then!

You are wrong, I do have imagination. And you have a sick mind. You haven't read my other reviews I see. Anyways, you might wanna read my last reply.

You don't know me at all (thank goodness) so stop attacking me. You have no right. Quit being a troll.

Take care :)

Duv12 wrote on Feb 17, 2009 at 12:01PM

Maybe it is creepy to you because you have No imagination. There is nothing scary, creepy or indecent in this movie. It is your typical good against evil movie, as most are. The Nothing is the evil bad guy and Altreyu and Bastian (now that he is in the story) are the good guys trying to save the princess (aka damsel in distress) Lets see, Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Alladin and the list goes on. All the same theory, good guy trying to beat the bad guy to save the damsel in distress. And as for indecent, are you one of those people that can find indecent things in the clouds and buildings? Give me a break have yet to see any of these things in ANY movie and I have a kids collection of movies let me tell ya. With three kids I have seen them all and most likely have them too.

This movie is a great movie. It teaches that with determination and will power, good can beat evil. It also teaches that just because we are different or come from different places or races (rock people, the dragon, the little people, ect.) we can all work together to reach a common goal. Buy it, watch it and enjoy it with your kids or even for yourself.

I will agree that the second and the third were not as good as the first but they have their meaning too. Take care and Blessed Be.

Thank you so much for replying. :D I agree, a lot of shows now are so inappropriate. You know, I'm going to watch this movie again and pay attention to it and let you all know. :D

libadet wrote on Feb 17, 2009 at 2:12AM

I loved this movie! It is imaginative, well-structured, meaningful and not scary at all. I felt it was a magical movie, so much so that I have watched it several times and it's a favorite with our entire group of family and friends. I think it is a much healthier piece of work to watch that the trash that the Simpson's spews out. It teaches something decent...something that is lacking in this society of disrespect, disregard and wastefulness.

:D

Oh wow, thanks for mentioning that. I too did notice that when I read the first two stories of "The Chronicles of Narnia." Yay, I'm not the only one who noticed that! lol! I haven't read the rest of the stories yet. When I read the first one before "The lion, the witch and the wardrobe" it was interesting to see how that world developed. I forgot the title of that story, lol. I do remember that C.S. Lewis wrote it after "The lion, the witch and the wardrobe" but he wanted it to be added before it (prequel). Sorry, I hope this made sense. I'm kinda distracted, lol!

PattyTherre wrote on Feb 12, 2009 at 10:56PM

I never saw it but heard of it lots of times. I wonder what I was doing when everyone was watching movies? lol.

That's funny about Bridge to Terabithia. I never wanted to watch it b/c I couldn't get into the fantasy part of the movie. But one day I saw a video on Disney Channel w/excerpts of the movie in it and I wanted to see it. I watch it a lot now. Oh, I do love the Chronicles of Narnia but for a Christian you can see how the movie is done to embody the life of Christ and Christian living. Anyone that reads C.S. Lewis would figure out that. I hope that you will watch Bridge To Terabithia soon and maybe you'll post another review.

Yeah, I think so too. I realized that when I was thinking of the movie, "Flight of the Navigator" and when I watched it, I thought now I know what the movie is about. LOL!! When one is a kid, we mostly just look at what's going on and not understand the story.

LOL!!!

Yeah, me know how to write reviews.. me thinks? **scratches head :P

The second one stunk. They didn't film the movie with the same actors. Funny thing, we have "Bridge to Terabithia" but I haven't seen it. LOL!

Cool, I'll look at it. :D

LisaCarey wrote on Feb 12, 2009 at 10:25AM

i think it's one of those movies that you miss those points as a child but then really notice them as an adult

GigiandAdonai wrote on Feb 12, 2009 at 10:23AM

Yay, she CAN still write reviews :+) My brother loved this movie as a teenager. I have never watched it but almost bought the 2-disc set the other day w/Part 1 and 2. I was wondering about what all the hype was for my brother. Have you ever seen "Bridge To Terabithia?" That is an awesome movie with a beautiful musical score and soundtrack. I reviewed them both. Check it out if you haven't already watched it.
