The Mist Review Summary

"Exposes underbelly of science vs. religion debate" is what most Viewpoints moviegoers are thinking after seeing The MIst. Based on a Stephen King short story, he collaborates with director Frank Darabont again, with successful results like their other works, Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. A few reviewers were disappointed to not be as scared as they would have liked watching The Mist, yet feel it "offers a good look in the human psyche." When Stephen King is on his game, "he can make event he most worn out concepts work like new."

I'm on the fence with this one. One moment, I want to bash the film for its poor computer graphic imagery and weak sci-fi effects. On the other hand, I want to herald it as the most thought-inducing horror film I've seen this year. Last year, I watched The Descent and enjoyed it for its visceral… read full review »

The first time I read The Mist by Stephen King, I was frightened. It was the first story to really give me the creeps. It is my all time favorite horror story. With that in mind, I couldn't wait to see the film version of The Mist. — — Almost every time, the film version is a poor copy… read full review »

When I was a freshman in college - back in the mid-1980s - and still in my "rabid Stephen King fan" stage, I bought the hardcover edition of the best-selling "Master of Horror's" anthology of short stories Skeleton Crew, which not only featured stories along the lines of "Word Processor of the Gods," "Survivor Type" and "The Monkey," but showcased a novella titled The Mist, in which a cross-section of a small Maine town's population is trapped by unearthly monsters in a supermarket after a storm knocks out the electricity and a strange mist envelops the town and the surrounding… read full review »

Frank Darabont is one of the better directors who has tackled Stephen King stories for the screen.  Most really like his The Shawshank Redemption, and some liked his The Green Mile too.  The latest collaboration has resulted in THE MIST. If you aren't hung up on originality, this one works most of the time as a creepy horror film delivering some overly recognizable character types that you'll probably have enough empathy for, so that the jolts and twists of the story really work quite effectively. — Now I'm not saying for one nano-second that this highly derivative film… read full review »

he horror fiction of Stephen King is frequently overly derivative, taking ideas from the monster comics, sci-fi movies and terror television of the author's youth. But when King is on his game, he can make even the most worn out concepts work like new. With The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, director Frank Darabont proved to be one of King's most reliable film collaborators. In bringing The Mist - one of King's better stories – to the screen, Darabont does nothing to tarnish that record. David Drayton (Thomas Jane of The Punisher) is a commercial illustrator whose work on a… read full review »

Although I love Stephen King as an author, most of his movie adaptations are pretty awful.  There have been a few good ones (The Shining, Carrie, etc.), but most go the way of awfulness like Dream Catcher or Secret Window,  However, Frank Darabont did a good job on Shawshank, so this showed some promise. —  This film contained shades of 2 of my favorites from the Horror/Sci-Fi Realm; H.P. Lovecraft and the Twilight Zone.  Yes, the movie contained mythical monsters from another dimension, and also examined the human condition with a diverse… read full review »

This is one of Stephen King's best movies to date. He anwers the age old question who will win religion or science? With his numerous plot twists and the ability to keep the viewer on the edge of their seats throughout the entire movie, he is able to tke up deep into the minds of the characters as well as himself. I would reccomend this movie to anyone who is a Stephen King… read full review »

This was a great sci-fi flick! The way everyone reacted to "The Mist" was realistic. Some wanted to stay put, some wanted to leave, some wanted to blame.... A typical dividing of the ranks! What makes a good sci-fi movie is the ability to make you believe it could really happen. That's what makes it so suspensful. I would recommend this to all my sci-fi… read full review »

This movie is based upon the novella of the same name by Stephen King.  It has a special place in my heart because it was the very first thing by King that I ever read, and it sunk its hooks into me so deeply that I've been a fan of his ever since. — The movie follows the novella fairly closely (as I recall - it's been quite a while since I've read the novella) up to the breakout from the grocery store. — In a (very brief) nutshell, the story is as follows: — A small Maine town is hit by an extremely strong thunderstorm one night.  The next day, as part of cleaning… read full review »

This is one of my favorite short stories by Stephen King. I was one of the first in line the day before Thanksgiving to see this film. I was hoping one day that they would make a movie out of this story but I was glad that they waited. The Special Effects would have been horrible if they had made this movie even five years ago and the story line hinges on the believability of the things in the mist. — — The movie stays true to the short in most ways and that is really a good thing. This is not just a horror movie. It is a study of human and group dynamics. A look at how large… read full review »

We all see trailers for movies and think "wow that movie is either going to be really great, or really aweful". When I first saw the trailer for THE MIST I thought it was going to be hokey and just plain poorly written. I couldn't have been more wrong. — This film deals with more than just it's immediate subject matter of "something in the mist". It strikes down deep into the bedrock of human failing. How often do we stop to think of the consequences of our actions? How often do we think that, by making this one bad choice, it will effect the course of so many other things? —… read full review »

The movie was intense.  I walked in expecting a horror film when all i got instead was more of a intense break down of the possibilities of what could happen.  There would be those tyed in but inocent, the unbelievers, the unrealists, the realists, the religious, the quick to blame, the rioters, ect.  It showed the different characteristics that come out of people when fear takes over.  Im not just labeling it as fear but it goes beyond fear.  It took the audience on a little trip of self discovery in the sence... as a viewer with every new situation brought to the… read full review »

What a disappointment!  The movie The Mist was part of a recent family birthday celebration.  The best thing I can say about it is that we had a lot of fun panning the film over dinner afterward.  The story dragged painfully and the twists were not only predictable, but were predicted by the film itself.  The monster in the mist could have been interesting and was certainly an opportunity for some fancy effects but this opportunity was declined by director Frank Darabont, who chose instead to use tentacles from a cheap 80's flick.  He did though, through in a couple… read full review »

Stephen King's The Mist:  — I totally enjoyed this movie.  I am a big fan of Stephen King and was anxious to see if this movie would prove to be as good as his others.  I was not disappointed.  This movie stars sexy, Tom James (The Punisher).  — A small town is taken over by a mist.  This is no ordinary mist and there are things lurking in the mist that are not of this world.  A group of people are trapped in a supermarket and are forced to fore-go their differences to survive.  — This movie keeps your attention from beginning to… read full review »

I love Stephen King stories, and went to this movie looking for a good scare.  Was very disappointed to that end.  I had read reviews that said this movie was on par with the The Shining from a suspense standpoint - nowhere near that.  It was an ok movie, and would recommend for home viewing on DVD, but not for full price movie theater fodder.  The most interesting aspect of the entire movie was the interaction between the people - the whole human relations impact and how groups of people act/change when confronted with the… read full review »
