This is one of my favorite short stories by Stephen King. I was one of the first in line the day before Thanksgiving to see this film. I was hoping one day that they would make a movie out of this story but I was glad that they waited. The Special Effects would have been horrible if they had made this movie even five years ago and the story line hinges on the believability of the things in the mist.
The movie stays true to the short in most ways and that is really a good thing. This is not just a horror movie. It is a study of human and group dynamics. A look at how large groups of survivors act in a time of crisis. The story takes some (in my opinion) rather stupid turns and makes you wonder how stupid people really would be in a situation like that and I cannot say enough about the ending. The ending was... unexpected and unnecessary and a great disappointment that made the entire movie seem a little pointless.
If I were going to recommend this to a friend, I would tell them to wait until it came to the 'Dollar Theater' or rent it on DVD and watch it with a good surround sound on a nice big screen. And don't plan on sleeping well that night because some of the effects are a bit disturbing!
