I will keep it clean, because that's what I do, but I am so unhappy with The Hartford. My husband and I were insured on our vehicles last year through The Hartford. They were recommened by my mother-in-law. We made our payments on time, each month. The prices seemed reasonable. The agent was kind. No trouble, no late notices. We were great clients.
In October, 2 weeks after I mailed in my insurance payment. I received a check from The Hartford, for $16. An "overpayment" was the note on the stub. I thought nothing of it, because I had sent them a few extra dollars a time or two, so that I would never have to worry whether the payment was made. I put that $16 in my bank account.
The very next day, October 3rd, to be exact, I was backing out of my spot at work, and I hit a car that was in my blind spot. I accepted full responsibility, knowing that it was my fault, because I hadn't seen the car. I gave the kind gentleman my insurance and driver's license information. I then called my agent, to report the accident. I had to leave a message, because they were closed. The next morning, I called again, and left another message. I heard nothing from them.
About a week later, we received a call from the other party's insurance and they said that my company was not cooperating, that they claimed that I was no longer insured with them. Thus I was reported to the DMV as not having insurance, which is illegal in the state of California. So, my license has been suspended for a year.
I never cancelled my plan. My husband never cancelled the plan. The Hartford decided that they were no longer going to carry car insurance, and they dropped us, without any kind of notice. That over payment check I put in the bank, that was them giving me back the money that they owed me, because they quit. My mother-in-law was covered through them as well, so she called her agent, and guess what? Her policy isn't valid anymore either, because The Hartford is no longer a provider of car insurance. They didn't give her notification either. Lucky for us, she's got a strong legal background, so we are going to take it to court. I had to pay over $300 to get my license back, and I can only drive to and from work, for a year.
The Hartford sucks. No one in my family will continue with them on any level from now on. They have changed their life insurance, and medical insurance since this came about in January. Be careful.
