The Grill Room Chop House & Winebar - Estero, FL —

Coconut Point Mall is jumping. Even with the reduction in shopping, the restaurants at this fabulous mall seem to be having a great season. We were attracted to the GrillRoom to meet some old friends from out of town who were visiting for the week.

We were seated promptly, despite what appeared to be a full house. The outside tables were all taken so we agree to sit inside. The decor is very woody, chop house style. In fact our server commented that he restaurant operated on the style of a Chicago chop house.

Okay. So after a round of drinks, including my ceremonial Australian Shiraz. (I'm at risk of becoming boringly predictable when it comes to wine.)  There also were a couple of martinis and a Manhattan among our party of five. And Susanne had her Pinot Grigio.

Among the menu items of the chophouse category were a small cut filet, a New York Strip, a Chicago cut filet, a Cowboy steak (don't ask; I don't remember). Also on the grill were salmon, mahi mahi, tuna, snapper, grouper and sea bass.

With the GrillRoom server so high on steaks, that's where I went, along with another carnivorous member of our party. The steaks were ordered medium rare and were cooked to perfection. A nice touch was the server's suggestion that we cut the steaks open to check the degree of cooking so they could be put back on the grill if too rare, or replaced if too done. Anyway, they were perfect and delicious.

Susanne ordered sea bass, which she raved about all night. Another co-diner had crab cakes, also first-rate she said. And the third non-steak at the table was snapper. There was not a dry saliva gland among us. Even the side veggies were well-prepared.

When asked about dessert, four out of five said "no thank you." One asked, "what's available?" Those may be the two most destructive words in the English language for anyone worried about their waistline. (Who isn't?).

We all relented and ordered key lime pie. One slice. Five forks. Good thing. As good as the key lime pie was, it was large and rich. Even the five us couldn't finish it after putting away a filling main course.

We split the check and the tip, well-deserved, I might add. And left for the cool of the night air.

Of course, there always is room for improvement, so I am reluctant give a five-star rating to any establishment. But this one was so close to the mark that I'm thinking, "what the heck?" I'm going back one day.
