The Golden Compass —

The evening I went to see The Golden Compass, I was looking for a fun, entertaing film as an "escape" from everyday affairs.  The Golden Compass fulfilled that need perfectly, with the only exception being that the movie seemed to end too soon.  I guess that is one sign of a good movie--that you don't want it to end.

The story revolves around a Lyra, a 12-year-old girl who receives a golden compass that allows her to see future or past events that she must use in her efforts to discover why other children are 'going missing' and who or what is behind these disappearances.  She is led into a grand adventure involving witches, fighting ice bears, cowboy-piloted airships, and other assorted creatures.  The computer graphics and special effects are amazing, which of course, seem to get better with each new fantasy or science fiction film.  I had no trouble believing the talking animals or flying witches were just a normal part of life.  If this description seems lacking in detail, that's because I prefer not to know too much about a movie before seeing it, as I want to experience the adventure firsthand. Some reviews/previews give away far too much information to my liking.

My only real complaint about this film is that there are many things left unexplained or unclear and the ending is somewhat abrupt.  But I understand translating a complex world from book  to movie always leaves some parts missing, much like the missing children in the film.  It did leave me wanting to read the original trilogy on which The Golden Compass is based, that being His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman.  Maybe this is a good thing, especially if it inspires children who see the movie to also want to pick up the books.

All in all, I would hightly recommend The Golden Compass as a fun, exciting adventure to escape into if you want to travel to another world for awhile.
