Well, first off, I didn't have much interest in seeing this movie, until all the boycotting began. I guess I don't understand all of the drama over a movie. As a mother, I monitor ALL of the movies and television shows my child watches. There are plenty of movies that aren't under a boycott that I would not let my child watch, for one reason or another.
For that reason, I decided to watch the movie for myself and decide how I felt about it. If you are someone on the fence, that maybe doesn't want to contribute to the movies revenue, I suggest getting the book from your library and making a decision from there.
I haven't read the books and I know very little about the author. I can't really comment on his atheist views. However I am always disappointed to see fans of Lord of the Rings bash other fantasy movies for being anti-Christian. There are many people who will criticize movies like this and Harry Potter, who have little or no problem with movies with language, nudity, violence, and sexual content.
I do not think this movie is appropriate for young children. It has more violence and adult concepts that I don't think a child would even find enjoyable. I don't think it's even appropriate for older children who don't clearly understand the concept of make-believe.
I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would. It was a fantasy story about a young girl in a fictional world. If anything bothered me, it was the naming of the spirit-animal beings (which by the way struck me as being a 'conscious' rather than a 'soul'.)
So basically, this is not the worst movie ever to hit the big screen, but it's a parents job to determine whether it is something their child can watch.
