Not for the realist...if you don't dig sci-fi, leave the room! Totally for the sci-fi lover, this one is fantasy all the way, futuristic adventure and comedy permeate every scene and you won't be bored...it keeps popping!
I read the bio of the writer and discovered that he penned this movie and Milla's entire alien language at 16. Over 800 words in all. Very inventive for a teen.
Bruce plays a cab driver who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time to pick up a beautiful, stranded woman who is anything but typical. Milla has escaped from a military lab compound where she had been held. (Her exit is quite exciting) and when Bruce has this strange fair fall into his lap quite suddenly (and literally), he realizes that nothing is what it seems and his ho-hum world is about to go ba-da-boom!!
So, Milla (with Bruce in tow) knows that she has been born for just one thing...to save the world from a deathly alien who is holding the world in an icy grip...and time is short. The race is on to bring Milla to the elements temple. A place where all the elements form a powerful weapon with Milla as the fifth and final element designed to defeat the alien holding Earth. Getting there isn't easy...they have aliens trying to stop her, aliens trying to help her, and a long journey to collect the other elements which are stored safely away where only Milla knows where, and along the way, Milla falls for Bruce the charming cab driver...so she starts wishing for something more than her deadly destiny but where does love fit in when you are nothing more than a weapon?
I hate chick flicks...I responded to this story of a unlikely heroine, a woman with extreme power but a gentle spirit. I believe that women are more powerful than men in many ways...and this highlights how the "weaker sex" isn't always the weaker one after all and that can be very sexy.
Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich shine with chemistry and the there is a lot of fun scenes with Chris Tucker's drag-queen style as the future disc jockey who hooks up with Bruce and Milla to save the world. A real surprise was the Diva, played by a French woman named Meawee with no singing or acting background who was cast short notice when the supermodel scheduled to play the diva disappeared. In my opinion, Meawee didn't get the recognition that she deserves for the incredible job she did. She gave that character a warmth and a plausability. I'm kind of glad they didn't hand that special character over to a plastic, strut-walking face jockey. ....Maewee's entrance onto the stage at the concert and her performance was a shock to everyone and also the entire cast. She had been kept a secret and so no one had any idea who or what was behind that curtain when it opens, so when you see a close-up of Bruce Willis's face when he sees her for the first time and watches that performance, his shock is obvious. The standing ovation is real.
Its a rush and you'll want to see it more then once. Great special effects, the music kicks butt and it's a love story for people who love sci-fi and hate chick flicks! Enjoy!!
