Early in the twentieth century Walter Dew ended a distinguished Scotland Yard career by capturing the murderous Dr. Crippen. In 1921 a passenger aboard an ocean liner was murdered and the crew was relieved to find the retired Inspector Dew was a passenger, later learning that the inspector had never left his retirement cottage. By the time the hoax was discovered the imposter had vanished and his identity was never discovered. In The False Inspector Dew Peter Lovesey has taken this factual event and woven a fascinating mystery.
He invents a full character for this man, including why he was on this ship, as well as reasons for his impersonation. I cannot say more without revealing the story except it shows just how bizarre truth can be.
