This book is about Jean-Dominique Bauby's recollections of his life before he suffered a stroke. He was the editor of French Elle when he suffered a stroke in 1995. He was in a coma for 20 days and when he awoke, he was completely paralyzed and was diagnosed with locked-in syndrome. His only means of communication was by blinking his left eye. He had the entire alphabet recited to him and blinked his eye when they reached the correct letter. This is how he was able to tell his story.

A short read, but full of amazing details of this man's recollections of family and friends. You can hear his laughter, feel his joy, anger and pain as he recounts his life before the stroke. His pain goes right to your soul when he dreams of walks on the beach with his wife and children. His suffering echoes in your mind when he hears the pain in his father's voice.

I cried throughout most of this book because I realized how many little things I'd taken for granted in my life. Upon completion of the book, I handed it over to my mother to read. She's read it several times and loves it as much as I do. I've also recommended this book to numerous friends who all agree that this is one of the best books they've ever read. I hope you enjoy this book as much as we have. And I hope the movie does this book justice.
