We got a membership last year and I love to take my daughter.  She is young so does not really appreciate the animals yet, but it is a great place to get out and enjoy the weather when it is nice.  And I am old enough to enjoy the animals--I am impressed with the exhibits and the staff is very helpful. ... review »

I have lived in the Detroit area for most of my life and for a good part of that time the Detroit Zoo was always a bit of a joke.  Oh sure, I remember going there when I was a kid and thinking it was all that and a bag of chips.  But that was before I got out in the world and visited some really great...

I have been to the Detroit Zoo so many times in my life it is impossible to count.  As a child I remember the zoo as being great, and huge.  It is still great, but it is now much better.  It is cleaner and much more educational than it used to be.  Definately worth going to a minimum of once or more a year.

The penguin house is cool, the picnic area is nice.  The food is a bit expensive, but you can easily carry a picnic lunch, which is what we always do.

Take a picture of your family by the big fountain.

The Detroit Zoo is a great place to spend a day. There are many different types of animals there. The habitats are designed to look open (no cages). The zoo is fairly large, good for walkers. During the summer, the gardens are beautiful. The fall is also beautiful there.
Also, peacocks roam the zoo free to go where they want.

By far, the polar bear/arctic circle habitat is the best, it's beautiful! The Outback area is really cool too.

If you live in the area and go more than 1 a year, I highly recommend getting a membership. It includes going in and parking each time you go. You also...

The Detroit Zoo has come along way.  The improvements are well noted.  The zoo is good year round with many activities for the holidays.  Breakfast with Santa, halloween time decorations and activites, the Easter bunny, and many more other activities year round.  The playgrounds are nice for playgroups.  The eating places are priced quite high, but are normal to the movie/amusement park pricings.  I think that consideration should be given to winter transportation, such as trams or even the train being used it could be themed the polar express.  This would be helpful during the colder... review »

I took my children to the Detroit zoo expecting to see animals and was sorely disappointed. They have closed most of the exhibits and a lot of the animals that were still supposed to be on the seen were MIA. I was really disappointed with the cost and quality of the food too. I won't be telling my friends to go there that's for sure. The only good thing was the admission price. I paid $11.00 for myself and I think $6 for the kids, so that is very reasonable for any afternoon activity. I will also say that the facility was very clean and the staff was friendly. If this zoo gets some more exhibits... review »

When I was a young mom, all the families in our area used to drive to the Toledo Zoo instead of going to Detroit. But in the last 10 or 15 years Detroit has really turned their zoo around and it's become a wonderful place. There is an event every fall called Run Wild For the Detroit Zoo (google it if you're a runner) - it's a great family-friendly event and you get to stay at the zoo for the whole day after the race if you want. The only downside to the zoo in my opinion is that it is a very large, spread-out area, and the exhibits are not close to each other. If you have small kids, you'll definitely... review »

I visted the Detroit Zoo for the first time over the summer and I was pleasantly surprised.  I had not heard too many positive things about the zoo in my 3 years since moving to the Detroit area hence my delay in checking it out.  I took my brother and his family and we had a great time.  I love that the zoo is not a large one so seeing everything in a day is very do-able without feeling totally exhausted from lots of walking.  It was very clean, had a good variety of animals, a very knowledable and friendly staff and lots of things to keep a toddler interested as well as adults.

The Zoological Society has really taken over and greatly improved this zoo.  The city had let it lapse in favor of other places and projects, but the society has made some great improvemnets.  They genuinely seem to care about and for the animals.  They offer a lot of family and community involvements and opportunities.  A lot to do for a small amount of money.  They will very soon be competing with other big zoos in the country.

The Detroit Zoo is wonderful. As a child I would take the gray hound bus with me girl friends from Try and ride the several miles into Royal Oak to go to the zoo. Back then it was free. The zoo has changed much after all these years but I can honestly say it is a change for the better. I love the monkeys, and the beautiiful bird house. My 90 year old mom loves the penquinarium. And everyone who goes must ride the train.

I went to the Zoo earlier in the fall. I have been to a number of zoos accross the country and this was not one of the best. Many of the exhbits were far away or the animals were blocked by trees. I only put I would recommend this to a friend because it is the biggest in Michigan. A great zoo is the Lincoln park zoo in Chicago and it is free, ran by all donations!

We are not big fans of the local Detroit zoo. There arent even elephants anymore?  We have found that we like going to a zoo over near Kalamazoo much more.  Our zoo seems so dirty and spread out.  Not knocking it but just not our favorite.

The Detroit Zoo is a great way to get some exercise while visiting the Animials that live there. You can ride the train or have a picinic lunch. Become a member of the Zoological Society and you can attend other Zoos as well and as othen as you like!!

Highly recommend getting the membership if you live in Metro Detriot and have kids.  It pays for it self in a couple uses.  Great place to get some excersize while the kids stay entertained.
